I am a bit confused! If I want to go through Austria without going on the motorways, do I have to get a Go Box?

Entirely possible to go through without the motorways and therefore no need for Go Box.

We have been ski-ing in Austria with out buying a Vinette ( we are only 3.5 )
WE had travelled from Rotterdam in to Germany and then decided to give it a try, we had no problems just using the A roads.
Hope you have a good trip, it really is a beautiful country.
We used Camping Cheques for our sites that we bought with our ferry crossing from the Caravan Club.
If you buy them when booking you get ITX fare rates, this makes your cheques almost free.
