...I flicked the hot oil at the bottom of the frying pan over the top side of the egg to cook the white that is around the yolk...

As I did so I was reminded where I had picked up this method from.

It was when I was about 12/13 years old and on a YHA cycling holiday with my school chum Michael Alterton from Hong Kong.

We were in the hostel kitchen and a father was showing the above technique to his son.

    It got me thinking...

What stuff/tips/techniques that you use today did you learn all those years ago and where from?

Drawing a straight line on the side of a bit of wood or somesuch just using a finger as a guide

Using 6 sided ring spanners and sockets instead of 12 sided things

Putting a bit of cellotape on a plastered wall before knocking in a nail or drilling a hole

Fairy liquid or similar to put tyres on rims

Another tyre related one.. It is often difficult to get an inner tube valve through a rim if the tyre is stiff. A welding rod through the rim hole and into the valve stem will act as a guide

Plumbers flux is amazing on crappy wires

First wife showed me how to make a quick cup of tea in the cup using the strainer

Old thick lino can be cut up and used in clutch plates in an emergency

Mr Sheen gets off sticky label residue

Mr Sheen also makes bikes sparkle ( it is what jorno's use on foto shoots  )

Tights do NOT make a decent temporary fan belt

A leather trouser belt DOES make a workable fan belt ( Just ! )

    Oh.. a good one this..

So your in the middle of now where and the poxy batteries go phut in the telly remote.

Take the batteries out and have a bit of a chew on them ( really !! ) put several nice tooth marks in them and they will last another week or so

Also with remotes.. To check they are working, point them at a digi camera or phone camera and press a button on the remote. The camera / fone can see the infra red and if it is working you will be able to see the LED blinking away

Using a teaspoon instead of a knife is a much more efficient method of whitening the top of your egg.
