hi all sorry to be on the scrounge but my little smart engine has expired timing chain failure at 47000 miles so i was wondering if any funsters just happened to have a spare engine just lying around in a shed somewhere it doesn't have to be a runner but just have enough bits on it to maybe make 1 out of 2

thanks in advance

we had to have the timing belt tensioners changed

We have had to have the timing belt tensioners changed on our 4/2 (Mk7 shape) at around 4,000 miles.. that meant we had to have a lot of other parts changed.. it was under manufactures warranty.. but the timing belts on Smart have always been an issue.

There a a number of secondary Smart dealers in the South East.. one at Redhill and one in Dunton Green nr Sevenoaks... might be worth calling them... main dears waste of time.

The MHD on the latest version 4/2 is know to be an issue and we have had our in twice and Mercedes say there was a change order given all all the ones that came in with an issue.. even with the change it still plays up.

Love Smarts.

having taken half the car in bits to gain access to the engine.
upon removing the rocker cover its fairly obvious that some of the valves have come into contact with at least 1 piston.
so next step is remove the cylinder head although at this time i feel like just dragging it up to the edge of a cliff and pushing it off.
all i know is its going to be mega bucks to fix even doing it all my self.

someone must have some spare bits kicking around somewhere:cry::cry:

I was warned by the Merc service people

I was warned by Merc service people to always check the oil as it has a tiny sump... It amazes me it has 6 spark plugs.... Have you tried the Sart forum? You might get lucky on there.. But a replacement engine is serious dosh.

its not been an oil problem its always been just under the max mark in the time i have had it
it just rattled a bit then yesterday rattled a little differently before it stopped.

i think the most economical thing to do is just buy a cheap run around until i can get it fixed but then am i just buying more problems.

if it is turbo 799cc then expensive

If it was one of the last Mk7 type (4/2) with the 6 speed turbo charged 799cc engine then that is an expensive item... I might add I think it was the best engine.

The new 4/2 with 5 gears non turbo may be faster, but no way is it as much fun to drive. Even with the roof all the way down.

There is a company that do rebuilds on these engines for £800 - they are a smart specialist and seem to do most of them.

Ignore the mileage, smart engines do not last very long!! I have my owns thoughts when I see them pass me a 90mph....it is only a baby bike engine after all!

hi guys well it is indeed going to have to be a replacement engine.
it is a 03 plate mk7 599cc turbo with 6 speed soft touch transmission.

having seen damage to 1 valve after taking the rocker gasket off i decided to delve a little deeper and remove the cylinder head.
number 3 piston has a hole in it and the cylinder head looks like a bomb has gone off in there.

the inlet valve has obviously taken the brunt of what ever happened and lost its head which in turn has had a nice attempt at getting out of the head smashing both spark plugs and embedding itself in the end of the conrod through the top of the piston.

therefore i have decided that this particular engine is destined for the scrap pile.
and my over stretched overdraft is going to get hit quite hard:cry::cry::cry::cry:

Yes the new Smart is a 999 cc .. sure our mk 7 (last of the 4/2's old shape) was 699cc it had the higher BHP engine ... may be the Pluse was a lower rated engine... our passion had the turbo 6 speed 699cc mercedes engine.

Hope you find a spare for it.

at the moment its sat on blocks in the garage with only half an engine in it.
was bidding on one on ebay and got outbid by just £10.00 but i had bid as much as i was going to.
my local insurance write off breakers yard has a smart in but it has had a fire so don't know if it will be any good or not suppose it depends on where the fire started but they aren't open until tuesday.

just looking around and it looks like getting another car is going to be the best option for the short term at least but having to borrow the money to get one makes the choice a little harder.

i have seen a pug 206 for £500 about 5 miles from home thats taxed and tested so looks like thats going to be the one until i can gather the money to repair the smart.:cry::cry::cry:

Smart Engine

Hi, we have a 2002 450 Passion, 599cc, bought it earlier from Fudgesmart in Iselam, near Newmarket in Cambridgeshire, a Smart specialist and very well thought of on the Smart Forum , away from home at the moment, so cannot give the number, but well worth the effort`to contact him.

found the cause of the mass destruction

it seems that a camshaft follower has been running slightly off centre and wearing slowly into the camshaft bearing post until it has managed to slip of the valve stem, release the collets and drop the valve into the cylinder writing off the piston and the cylinder head.

its going to be an expensive repair as i also have to re-ring it and put new big end bearings on the crankshaft.
thats after finding a cylinder head and piston.

hopefully tomorrow will be a change in my luck.
