Hi, Travelling through France in January Can be dodgy if you do go down the west routes, As an alternative you can get the Brittany ferries Economie mid Jan for about £365 with a cabin or £280 on a reclining seat roughly the same fare March 27 back but you will have to be quick they soon go. There may be someone in the funsters who will give a discount code.
Sites in Beni La tarretta for access Villa Sol for the better site or the Orange grove for the lowest price but it is way out of Beni

Our journey to Benidorm will start with a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao.
If the ferry arrives at Bilbao on time, we will depart Bilbao at 9am and head for
Sobradiel, near to Zaragossa,a drive of 190 miles. We will spend the night here
on the service area.
The next morning we will make an early start and drive to
Benidorm, a drive of 295 miles.
Hopefully we will arrive at Benidorm by 3pm.

The Caravan Club can be quite usefull for booking ferries with a discount and free camping cheques but this is usually cross channel so you would be driving down France. We have not done the ferry to Spain just incase it rough (wimps).

Now you have read about the potential for problems in Spain or anywhere else for that matter you should be OK as forewarned is forearmed.

The Benidorm sites might be busy but there is a lot more to Spain than just Benidorm.

Why tie yourself up with the CCC , choose which route you want book the ferries read the links, given on other posts, don't sleep on the motorways , have a good read of links and blogs. Be aware if you travel through France the weather could be a against you. If you choose going through France the A75 is a good route there is a good Aire near Clermont Ferrand at St . Poutcain sur Sioule , Which is open all year then over the Millau Bridge a good route we did in January this year.

If you tie your self to sites and don't like it you are stuck, the beauty of the Motorhome is that you can easily move. Welcome to Fun keep asking the questions. :welc:

Hi Harold
We are going via Bilboa arrive there 6th Jan down to Aranjues just past Madrid first day, on to Los Gallados for a few weeks, then up to Almafra Benidorm on the C & CC Rally, on the 15 Feb , then on to Bonterra Park in benicassim also on the Rally then back to Bilboa the end of May, as for traveling we have done this for the last 7 years with no probs, but just be aware of your surroundings when driving and parking on the services etc. Pete (y)
Ps We book with the C & CC because we like the sites the rallies are on.

Thinking of ferry to bilbo or Santander ??
Hi
You have to watch what time the ferry docks in Bilbo, afternoon not a lot of light left for the onward journey, the one we have booked is a two night crossing leaving Portsmouth late evening (not my favorite I prefer the 1 night but better docking time arriving early in Bilboa) so plenty of time to get down past Madrid in the daylight. Think the best thing to do is to tell us roughly what plans you have in your mind then ask the specific questions. Don't worry about all the scare tales you read about things can happen which ever country you are in just be aware, but most of all enjoy yourselves.

Hi, Harold, and welcome to the friendliest motorhome club on the Internet.

We have driven in Spain and France with no problems whatsoever but we would like you to heed this warning. Forewarned is forearmed!

The Foreign Office warns tourists heading to Spain that British-registered vehicles can be an 'easy target' for criminals on the motorways. Owners have had their passports, money and possessions stolen in quick-distraction muggings.

The thieves use loud noises, fake accidents and supposed pleas for help with their own vehicle problems to trick their victims before stealing belongings from British vehicles or mugging the motorist.

For example, you may be driving along the motorway and not notice that someone in another car throws a stone at your vehicle. There is a loud bang. The criminals then gesticulate that something is wrong with your vehicle. You pull over to see what has happened and the gang pulls in behind you and persuade you and your passengers to leave your vehicle. The criminals cause a distraction at the back of your vehicle whilst an unseen accomplice steals from the front. Ladies handbags left in the passenger foot well are a particular target. If one of you does get out of the vehicle then it would be advisable to ensure that the other remains inside and locks the doors.

You may be more tired and therefore more vulnerable when you've been travelling, so separate your valuables into different places in the vehicle, so you are less likely to lose all your belongings in one hit. Also, be on your guard against anyone who attempts to stop you or ask you for help, as they could be part of a gang operating a scam.

We wish you a very happy and safe trip to Spain. The Spaniards are lovely people and the majority are law-abiding so you should have a great time. The above examples of crime are rare. Just wanted you to be aware of potential problems so that you can avoid them. Often it's not the Spanish but other nationalities that carry out the crimes. In fact, you are more likely to be a victim of crime in the UK!

Best regards
Rob & Val

Hi people,

Pauline and myself have been down to Portugal and Southern Spain twice now without incident. We had similar fears when we embarked on our first trip. However, we did speak to a couple on our second trip who had an encounter with a bogus coppa whilst traversing Barcelona. This guy was in an unmarked car and not in uniform. He did get them pull over to the road side and he did relieve them of about 500 euro, saying he though they might be carrying counterfeit money, so they allowed him to view their currency, once it was in his hands he did tell them it was. He receipted them with an official looking piece of paper for their cash and was gone.! They drove to the nearest copshop and where informed it was a put-up job.!

Having read articles on being duped whilst abroad, we will not pull over for any unmarked car regardless of what the occupants look like. We have been pulled over for "A Framing" our matiz in Spain, but this was by the Guarda in full dress uniform. Very nice guys and they do carry a gun, so one does speak to them with respect.

My advise.! Don't be afraid to do your trip, thousands of us do it ever year without incident. Just keep your eyes open. Always be aware of what and who is behind you. If you see that a car keeps with you for several miles then be on your guard. If you are unsure find the nearest copshop or coppa. Just use your head.! Overnight on official sites.!

Hope this helps.

Mike and Pauline.

If you are traveling through France, as an alternative to the Clermont route - which goes over the massif centrale so is high and can be affected by the weather - you can use the A20 (much of which is free) via Limoges. You say you travel for 12 hours - you could easily reach us at Parc Verger in that time, so you'd get a good night's rest before moving on. Through December and January Funsters pay only 12,50€ (about £10) including 2 people and 16A ehu, so if you have paid your subs come on down and see us!
