Almost a Newbie but not quite now.
Good evening all,
I needed to have a rear molar extracted about a month ago and the dentist managed to remove threequarters of it. She has referred me to a specialist to have the rest taken out as she could no longer see it. I have now got an appointment for July on our return from an 8 week trip to Spain/Portugal. The reason for the delay due to our leaving before an earlier appointment date of late May was offered. I tried other specialists but they were supplying the same timescales.
This week we took a trip to Haven at Cleethorpes when I had pain in my gum/cheek and after ringing home for an appointment we returned a day early to meet this. The dentist supplied me with a prescription for anti-biotics to clear up an abcess, saying she cannot issue more than one scrip unfortunately. I am now wondering if this flares up again whilst travelling what to do. I went to the doctors but could not get by the receptionist who stated the doctor will not issue prescriptions for dental problems. When I phoned later that day to speak to the practice nurse I was informed she will only take "emergency calls" on a Friday afternoon.
I will try again next week but am wondering if the pharmacies abroad are prepared to issue them without a scrip. Does anyone know ??

Slightly off topic but related.

The painkiller drug combination of Paracetamol and Codine readily available in this country eg Nurofen+, and very effective too, are not available in a number of overseas countries as that combination is considered as potentially addictive. So, if you use them here then check overseas availability before you travel.

usually if you take the packet into a pharmacy etc they just sell you what you want . have never had a problem .
most chemists abroad you tell them your problem they sell you the ideal product to help you .
Thanks for that. Just the information I need. Never fails this forum :dogthanks:

Have bought that combination on two different occasions in Portugal, no problems.

Make sure you have your EHIC card, you never know, but from experiences in Portugal there are many dentists and prices are reasonable. Many pharmacies can sell prescription drugs directly.

In Spain you can definitely buy them very cheaply, tell the pharmacist what you need them for and they give the appropriate ones, 2 euros last time we bought them.

I would go to a private Dentist and get a perscription and ask if he will remove it when the inflamation has gone down .Why did not the dentist xray your mouth at the time to see if anything was left inside you gum and where, then should have being able to finish the job in one go . Not something to look forward to .It looks like you will need an antibiotic as well as a pain killer .If you can get it out before going i would , brings back bad memories lol.

Sounds like the part left is so dep you are having an op to remove it. Antibiotics readilly available abroad, If you have medication with a high dose of codeine, you should have a doctors letter saying why you need it. Having said that I have carried it all over Europe, not even in original packaging, but no one has asked to see my meds. Haven't needed it for years and stuff I have is out of date so wont be taking it again.

Both excellent answers.

PM me if you need the name of a specialist in the Lisbon area, I know specialists who can see you at 48 hours notice

I woke up on a Saturday morning with raging toothache, when in Spain last month. I knew that it was an infection, because it had been rumbling along for a week or so, but I'd been hoping it would go away. Sadly, it didn't. Being Saturday, I couldn't find a dentist who was open. I had read reports about the possibility of buying antibiotics over-the-counter in Spain and as I was in excruciating pain (and yes, I'm a woman and know what 'excruciating pain' is like ) so I decided to go to a pharmacy and ask for amoxicillin.
The first three pharmacies which I tried, turned me down, saying I needed a prescription. Luckily, I then landed upon a young pharmacist who had recently completed his training in Barnsley! He was very keen to practise his English, and came up with the goods :). The pain subsided within a few hours.
So, what I'm saying is - 'Don't rely on being able to buy antibiotics over-the-counter in Spain.'

Good advice again.

I find that being able to show a previously prescribed packet with my name on tends to help convince pharmacists.

Thinking outside the box, how about having the rest of the tooth removed in Spain?
I had a fractured wisdom tooth extracted in Cartagena by an excellent English speaking dentist.
They do all kinds of dental surgery including implants etc so are not your run of the mill dentist
They are very professional and very reasonably priced. Initial consultation and extraction carried out at the same time.

You can email them in English via their website

It is far harder in places in Andalucia than here in Murcia.

I was in Lagos,Portugal last week, and my "healthy" breakfast cereal was too much for my already damaged teeth. On biting a hard bit,I nearly flew to the moon, unaided!
Walked into town, went in to the first dentists I could see. 10 minutes later I was in the chair, another few minutes, remains of tooth was out. OK I was in a headlock for a few minutes, but it was a lady dentist so quite comfy :D.
Cost me 70 euros, plus another 12 or so for antibiotics and mouthwash.
So,what Im saying is,thank you Portugal for having good dentists.
And maybe Ill get some sympathy, well, maybe not!;)

Almost a Newbie but not quite now.
Many thanks for all the replies. I think the main problem I had is that it was an old gold crown and the tooth had been elongating as there was no tooth below. On her pulling and pushing the crown came away and then the tooth came in bits. (She had X-rayed it beforehand). I am on the NHS for dental treatment and medical,,,, silly me,,, but I use them very infrequently and ,,,, silly me,,,, expect to get a service when needed. The Nottingham appointment system gave me many options of seeing the "specialist" but all were offering appointments for 3 - 4 weeks away,,,, we were leaving in 2 and a half so reliant on a cancellation then found the practice I am now booked in the dentist only attends on a Tuesday,,, nice work if you can get it. So now trying to offset any problems by thinking ahead and preparing,,, shame the NHS cannot seem to do this.
Anyway,, will take the box my pills are in and hope to a. not need them, and b. if needed get some more.
Oh yes,, and scrips are free for us young folk (66).
Thanks again all.
