Never been weighed either home or away!

Friend is a retired policeman and says it'll never happen but I don't believe him. He says they have not got the manpower!

The police rarely weigh vehicles these days, it is DVSA that do the checking and no longer need police to stop vehicles.

No it's just a lottery. I've past checking stations but they only pull in random vehicles (and not specifically motorhomes) or ones that have been spotted by patrols and they radio ahead. If your van looks level and stable it would be unlikely.

For our weight we use a trading standards weigh bridge that is open 24/7 self serve

Not quite a lottery DVSA target specific types of vehicles occasionally, including cars, caravans and motorhomes, the operatives are trained to spot potentially overloaded vehicles.

LGV's in the Operating Licence system are targeted on a traffic light point scoring system based on previous inspections and MOT results.

You are lucky to have a proper dynamic axle bridge close to you that is available, presumably the one at Morley.

Most DVSA weighbridges are unavailable for public use which seems a great waste to me.

Hi Andy
I have a hymer with 15inch wheels do you think I can swop for 16inch alloys when my tyres need changing I think they will look better and help with payload any info you can give would be a help thanks
I'm sort of looking in to this as well. My 2005 B584 is on a Maxi chassis but is fitted with 15" wheels. 15" wheels are on a different PCD to 16" wheels which means the hubs and discs are different from one size wheel to the other. My enquiries suggest that the discs are also of different diameters & if so that means the hub carriers are different. All of which suggests that the front axle weight limit might be different and not upgradeable by simply changing wheel size. I haven't looked at the rear.

Correct and the rear is the same
15" are 118 PCD and 73 mm centre hole
16" are 130 PCD and 79 mm

I think changes have been made on the x290 chassis as I bought a 16" wheel carrier but it would not fit an x250 wheel so I suspect they have rationalised the new one to 118 for both

I don't think that changing the wheels will make any difference to the axle weight limit at all, unless the wheels are LIGHTER so the overall weight of that axle (when checked on a weighbridge) is lower so in theory the extra bit of payload can be used but most people wouldn't have the actual axle weight so close to the permitted weight anyway.

I would suspect that its more related to the capabilities of the tyres available on 16" rims rather than 15" rims. I have 16" rims with Continental truck tyres on them and are weight rated at 120/121 compared to the camper tyres which are 116 from memory.

116 is the load index for 1250 Kilos per corner whereas 120/121 is 1400 kilos per corner so I have now got some spare capacity over my axle limit of 2,600 kilos. The front axle is limited to 2100 kilos with an overall limit of 4500 kilos.

So up to 5% no fine ? perhaps tolerance margin.
4.99% of 3500kg = 174.65kg hmmmmm a fair bit .

But it will NOT increase the amount of load you can actually put on the axle unless it is uprated!

Am I missing something????

On my Auto-Trail I have the Maxi chassis and 16" wheels. In order to upgrade both my overall Maximum Weight and the rear axle weight limit I had to fit air suspension and update the tyre load capacity to give me what I quoted in my earlier post. Nothing needs to be done to the axle itself but air suspension takes the axle to 2500 kilos and the higher load rated tyres take the rear axle up to 2,600 kilos.
