On and off for many years.
It's not that people are not robbed when asleep - they are - but that when they are robbed they claim to have been gassed when, probably they were in a very deep sleep. It is probably very embarrassing for a victim to have to admit to being asleep when there was a burglar in the same motorhome / room so the gas myth continues.

I've slept through an earthquake  and admit it!!!

Why do people buy expensive gas dector alarms in an attempt to protect them from "gassing"?

If no-one knows what type of gas is supposed to be being used, how do they know that the alarm will detect the "gas"? :Eeek:

Beats me!

gas detectors are not that expensive circa £35, and we have one fitted as we leave the gas switched on most of the time, the vehicle vibrates and flexes lots during a weeks use / travelling so its quite easy for a joint to leak or similar to happen. it does detect All LPG gasses and most anesthetic type gasses.
its as usful as a smoke alarm IMHO.

many many years! since I was a kid
the point is though that nobody doubts that thieves do break in, or just open the door, to motorhomes whilst the occupants are fast asleep. it happens all the time in some areas, and the local police have many confirmed cases, but only of theft.

gassing by narcotic gas to rob people as they sleep is a myth

personally I have severe lung problems and my larynx goes into spasm as I sleep. similar to sleep apnoea but more dangerous, so I need a respirator and oxygen at night. when I have to have operations, I need a specialist anaesthetist who will struggle to maintain my airway. therefore I have learnt a lot about how the lungs and sleep work and the risks involved in anaesthetics. Without a shadow of a doubt, I would say any unqualified person pumping narcotic gas into my van would kill me if I didnt have my equipment. It is estimated that at least 1 in 20 adults have some form of breathing problem, many undiagnosed. you just don't hear about people murdered in their sleep during a motorhome robbery though.

I am in a better position than most in one way though. if my oxygen supply drops from my concentrator or the ambient air is bad, an alarm sounds to wake me and anyone else in the van immediately. at the first sign of gas in the air, I would be the first to know
