Watching BBC tribute very moving .
It looks so peaceful and was when we visited 2 years ago hard to imagine the total carnage.

We made a visit to the Thiepval Memorial back in 2009 cycling London to Paris and went through the area passed many of the small graveyars and visited the Somme Museum. Such a moving place, very quiet and serene but so tragic.

It's good that so many children are involved in the service. The message of futility staying with them forever.

And after the slaughter of nearly 19,000 men on the first day General Rawlinson said (from the safety of his Chateau) "The Battle goes well"
And Haigs sister assured him he was doing well, because a medium had told her "that Bonaparte was guiding his hand"

"Lions led by Donkeys"

When you watch the history and rememberance, pomp and ceremony that was contained in this event you can't help thinking how the hell do the i.s. ( no capitals) think they can change our way of life?

Quite likely as he was using napoleonic tactics, the American civil war had proved the stupidity of that against modern weaponry, but our generals didn't reach high rank by ability, just by being born to the right class.
After the war Haig wrote a book in which he pronounced that the horse, the well bred horse, still had a roll on the battle field.

Sad thing is the generals never faced any comeback now they would be classed as war criminals. What a terrible time it must have been for all involved on all sides we should remember the dead on both sides equally in all countries they all fought for their countries (or so they were told) and not out of hatred for the individuals on the other side.
