Thanks that was how I intended to fit bolts, any recall on section size?
Thanks
Jim

That is brilliant how you have fitted the spare wheel carrier, will this fit a aluminium wheel

Having an Alko does not mean there is space for one

Sorry to drag up a (relatively) old thread.

@Techno , what size box section and angle plate did you use?

I will be looking to see if I can fit something like this underneath nmy Argos 747.

Have you seen any issues with flexing of the framework you made?

One final question (for now) what is the piece of box sections with cut angles mounted to the floor in post #54?

I think it was 100x50
Steel cannot flex as its fixed at both ends
Picture 54 steel gives tyre three points of contact

Hi.

Thought I would drag this thread up again rather than create another post :wondering::wondering:

Still planning on getting the spare wheel out of the way on my '57 747 Tag and @Techno 's design is probably the way forward but searchin around for info I found this:

https://www.al-ko.com/shop/uk_vt/spare-wheel-carrier-for-16inch-wheels-1.html

Is this too simple, will this not fit?

This would seem a lot simpler system. I need to crawl underneath to have a good look/measure up and hope to this weekend when I am away in it as I'll be on grass and the storage place I have it like a third world dirt road to lay on.

That looks similar to the spare holder on our 2001 Fiat based Motorhome, takes a bit of wiggling to get wheel back in but works.

Well after a lot of to-ing and fro-ing I got it fitted.
AL-KO dealer told me it would not fit as the last two rear braces were too far apart, when I measured them they were only 20mm further apart than the diameter of the wheel. I wont be using them for any servicing.

A few calls and emails to AL-KO and they confirmed that my chassis was supplied with a carrier..... so Burstner took it off.

Took the decision to order it and return it if it didn't fit.

arrived yesterday and I crawled underneath today to fit it. Fairly easy apart from laying on the ground in my C&MC storage is like a 3rd world bridle way...
Found I could not get it under the van due to the tow bar so I had to remove the whole rear cross beam...
Finally got it under and clamped up. I may replace the pins with long shackle padlock and I worked out if I Jack up the rear of the tow bar with the scissor Jack gives me just enough clearand to get it out but hopefully I wont need it as it's a ball ache to get out.

Interesting topic for me at the moment.

I’m thinking of putting spare under mine, but it leaves me with about 210mm clearance below, which I’m unsure is enough.

How close is yours to the road?

Andy.

I'll measure it tomorrow but it's not much lower that the side rails of the Alko and if it drags on the speed bump, it's made of pretty big steel so it will just scrape the hump.....

Ground clearance 200mm on the third world storage ground at Commons Wood C&MHC storage.

Nearly £700 a year to park in a potato field

Great thanks for that. About the same space as mine would leave then. Maybe I’m just panicking over nothing.

Thank you.

Techno (or anyone else who knows). Just saw your brilliant spare wheel set up! Have a few questions if I may, hopefully I haven't missed the info in among all the posts.
  1. Is the box section steel or aluminium and what wall thickness?
  2. Are the angled parts for points of contact, woodscrewed to floor?
  3. Do you happen to have a current link for the carrier you purchased as previously supplied link is no longer working?
  4. Can you say more about 'correct spacing for hanger and sufficient spring tension'. How do you know when tension is correct and is it trial and error?
TIA!
Jim
