Albufeira & Tavira - Best Places To Eat? (1 Viewer)

We will be having a break in Portugal shortly (sadly enough not time to take the motorhome ) so looking for reasonably priced genuine Portugese restaurants that locals use. We are Foodies so trying the local food when abroad is a big part of our holidays On a previous visit (having searched Tripadvisor) we found O Zuca tucked up a side street off the main square in Albufeira old town & O Lusitano near the library - we will be returning to these as both very good. Please post anywhere that you have found either in the Albufeira or Tavira area - sure with all the Funsters that visit or live in this area there must be some hidden gems out there?

Locally known as "Noella's" (afraid I don't know the proper name) this restaurant is constantly busy with local Portuguese people and Noella herself has been awarded prizes for her cuisine from as far afield as Lisbon.

It is the last (most eastern) restaurant on the "sea" front in Cabanas just 5kms east of Tavira. (Next door but one to the Beach Cafe.)

It has recently been remodelled and gone a bit "upmarket" but might be worth you checking out.

Thank you JJ - will look out for that one Just remembered the one inland where I had a fabulous octopus stew - A Ponte at Alte - very reasonable as a bit of a truck stop for workmen having their lunch but very authentic.

If you like steaks try 'O Castelo' in Tavira run by a young Brazilian couple, not cheap by Portuguese standards but excellent value. If you want authentic try any of the small bars that do a Prata do Dia for as little as €4.50. I had an excellent 'Feijoada a transmontana', glass of wine, pudding & a café for €5 in Olhao last week.
Three bars in Conceicao, next to Cabanas, all do excellent Prato's and change daily but sometimes have to ask.

'Cara de Bacalhau' may be best avoided though, certainly authentic but Cod's face is a little off putting.

Maybe not in the area you want but worth the info for anyone going to Lagos is this restuarant,we love it,the food is great and the locals queue to get in.

Don't know what it's called but if you go up the street from the square with the sea behind you , there is a genuine Portuguese restarunte on the left , in
Albuferia, .excelent. Usually a lady standing outside with leaflets, but not your standard pushy one.

Now back from Portugal (later than planned due to ATC strike) & didn't make it to Cabanas to try Noellas but will next time Did have some great authentic food - we were often the only tourists amongst the locals having their work lunch break. The best we discovered was Casa Simao in Tavira (take either of the roads on the left once over the Roman Bridge in to the old town) with great prices starting at 6 Euros for the Prato Do Dia, espresso coffee 60 cents plus fab homemade desserts for just 2 Euros - quality fresh food & excellent value See http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restau...-Casa_Simao-Tavira_Faro_District_Algarve.html

O David is an unpresuming kind of place up from the main square with tables in a line, paper table cloths and cheap menu but great food. In the dead of the off season there are always people in there. We had char grilled swordfish - excellent! Tiramisu although not Portuguese was homemade and delicious.

Agree O David is worth a visit had a lovely meal when we were their in September.
