We are parked next but one to a guy with an elderly Hymer, he was telling me yesterday that is replacement engine was from a Ssanyong, it is the 2.9 non turbo.

I will talk to him tomorrow and report anything worthwhile.

We bought her on Monday and traveled 2.5 hrs & 55/60mph then there was a tapping noise and big cloud of white smoke and she stopped!
We knew we would need to change the engine at some point as it has done 365k km but expected to get home first!

Thought for the future once you have it fixed.
That engine is known to be capable of 500,000 km or more and is one of the most 'bullet-proof' that Mercedes have ever made. With a new / recon engine and regular servicing and oil changes etc., the Hymer should be good for another twenty years or so !! (y)

We service our vehicles regularly. but we have found out that the guy we got MH from doesn't and hasn't had timing chain changed or checked since 2002 and has since travelled quite far in her! how ever once the engine is sorted she will be great (y)

I have just looked at your details, and it says you have a B694, but that is a Fiat-based Hymer. Your avatar picture shows a Merc-based one (as per this thread). Since you list yourself as a 'newbie', I wondered whether the seller had given you the wrong model designation. Yours looks like an S550 series or possibly S660 series.

Hi

Just an update as promised after speaking to the guy on the same field as us.

He said that its the block and head that are transferable, everything else like sump , timing chain cover and rocker top need to come off your engine.

Have fun.
