Hi,

Our son has mobility problems and learning difficulties - we'll be picking up our new motorhome in the next couple of weeks or so - is there any general advice that you more experienced travellers could pass on to us? What sort of things to watch out for and so on? We've hired a motorhome a few times to try it out and it seemed to go ok.

Thanks.

Hello Mercianman I have no experience of travelling in a motorhome with someone that has LD but there are a couple of well known Funsters that do - @Ambilkate and @old-mo - who should be along shortly with some words of wisdom. Well, Ambilkate will, old mo will just provide words!!:imoutahere:

Wishing you many happy miles in your new van and I hope all your roads are smooth and your wheels round.

Carry on as if you were at home....

Not a lot of difference really, just a more confined space, which helps for moving around a bit..... things to grab hold of if your son is less mobile..

Might pay to check out the sites you intend to use, as for suitability for disabled..

Other than that enjoy yourselves.. (y)

See !!! @Armytwowheels ........... I can do serious..... Sometimes..:tounge:

Hi @mercianman , As Old Mo says carry on as if you are at home . If aids are required at home you can pretty much put the same in van or find a way of improvising most motorhome company's will talk you through this bit if you need more help post on here there are quite a few funsters who have had adaptions to vans ect . As to the learning difficulties only you know your child /adult all I can say is that we have never looked back it was the best thing we ever did for our selves and our daughter and we are able to give her a fantastic life whilst we can and share this with the most fantastic Funster family . It has given us over the years a safe haven . Kind regards Kate x

You will be fine . How did your son get on when you hired one ?

We just make sure we have items that Amanda (our daughter) loves around her she loves her DVDs and her TV plus her crayons and paper oh and her Magnetics . So long as she is happy and doing the things she likes .
Infact half the time it's just like being at home for her we are so lucky with the motorhome we have solar panels fitted and inverters , good batteries so can run most electrical equipment and charge mobility scooter if and when required so .

We recently changed the van after 10yrs to a completely different layout . That did effect. aAmanda and it did take a while for her to adapt but took it all in our stride and with good friends on Fun she was and is a happy sole . Don't get me wrong we have our moments Amanda is a kitten but by god there is also a tiger in her but bless using divert tactics and routine we manage very well xKate

We tried a couple of layouts - quickly abandoned the idea of dropdown beds - they never worked properly or maybe we were just unlucky! So we went for one with a good sized lounge for Sammy to play in, with fixed beds for everyone so there would be no fuss changing things about. We are getting solar panels added on. We found that the kids got so tired after playing out all day that they probably would be able to sleep anywhere! :D
