Don't know if anyone uses this but I've just bought some for the wifes VW, from Halfords, 10l for £15 (trade price) and read advice on side that says it has a shelf life of 18 months if unopened but shorter if opened.

There's no way we will use 10l in 18 months.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realise it had a shelf life.

Depending on the amount of miles I end up doing, I'm hoping mine will not need much topping up in between the free service point top ups.

I have purchased around 40-50litres in the last 18 months. The best price i found was a truck stop in France where it was just 34 pence equivalent per litre and dispensed from a pump not unlike the Diesel Pump it was next to.

The fact that it was pump dispensed didn't help me I still had to do a juggling performance to get under the bonnet of my 'A' class, but it just shows how much of a mark up Halfrauds have in the stuff.

So if it only has a limited life and you are not doing many miles does that mean you have to drain and refill the tank on the vehicle regularly?
Makes me pleased the Fiat Euro 6 doesn't need AdBlue.

No, once in the vehicle that is considered okay.

When you consider that in the main we are talking about 'Purified Pigs Urine' here it seems that it must be that the purification is the expensive part as merely taking the Pi$$ cannot be!

Hi Popeye,

I appreciate that 'buying' that amount is different to 'using' that amount and that you could be doing high mileage, or using it in more than one vehicle, but how does your experience compare with Peugeot's figures of the 15 litre tank on the Boxer easily covering 6 - 8k motorhoming miles a year.

I'd trust an actual users figures over advertising blurb any time

In the first year of ownership the top ups are courtesy of Mercedes and I only covered around 3000 miles but even then the aggravation of calling in to a commercial Mercedes dealer just to get it for free was not for me. I noticed that I have 4 empty 10litre bottles one of which was a partially used gift from the Merc dealer and this must all have been used in the last year when I covered over 5000 miles. So I reckon I'm using 10 litres every 1500-2000 miles.

My customer has just had new fleet of fork lift trucks which all need adblue. We have a 1000 L container of the stuff which really upset the employees of a Muslim persuasion when they were told that pigs urine was being injected into the exhaust and they were surrounded by the fumes

Thanks for the information, that's a lot less than Peugeot are quoting.

It will be interesting to see how the Boxer fairs next year.

I can see no reason why a sealed container should deteriorate unduly as it is distilled water and urea. If you spil some the water content will evaporate and the urea will crystalise around the place it was spilled. NO DRY, not going to go off.

Correction, sorry the 4 empty 10 litre canisters are all of those used including the free top up from Merc

So I have used 10 litres for each 3000-3500 as the tank is now full and I have over 10,000 miles now

Ive used this in trucks for a few years and still think its bizarre putting urine into an engine.

If you could get them to run on it instead of diesel - that would be progress.

It is fed into the exhaust after the ignition and mixed with the fumes to reduce pollution, not into the engine.

Do note that you can’t keep a half-empty container of AdBlue in your garage if you have some left over after topping up, as airborne contaminants can affect the chemical.
The shelf life of AdBlue as defined in the ISO 22241-3 standards.
At constant temperatures up to 30 deg C the product will last a minimum of 12 months; at constant temperatures up to 35 deg C the shelf life is reduced to a minimum of 6 months.
  • Preferably between minus 6 °C and 25 °C just to be sure you can maximize the shelf life of 18 months.
Not many folk realise just how important it is to maintain the purity of adblue it should be regarded a sterile as any operating theater product
It can take in impurities and deteriorate from UV light and its own packaging hence 18 month max shelf life
use contaminated stuff and it wont do its job simples, even rainwater entering the adblue tank when filling will spoil the product damage to your vehicle may result
and im not taking the P**s

damage to your vehicle may result

Why?

An engine can be run without Adblue.

There are warnings, on dashboard, at estimated mileages still left to run, if you ignore these warnings and the Adblue tank becomes empty, as long as the engine is not turned off * the vehicle may be driven to a location for Adblue tank to be filled.

* if engine is turned off then it will not restart, a factor that has to be there by law.

Everything emission sensor wise and internals soot up resulting in either serious under or over fueling
Under fueling causes excess heat and piston damage, Over fueling causes bore wash oil depletion resulting in excess bore wear and main bearing damage
you seem to have done some research but only read what you wanted to see

Why do you think the system wont let you re start once stopped ? Just for the hell of it?

NO, I saw what I saw and asked WHY? to someone that may have found out more and possibly in the 'trade' that had a greater knowledge.

Why do you think the system wont let you re start once stopped ? Just for the hell of it?

Again NO, had read that it was a requirement and my research had not found anything about damage to engine.

I now have a greater knowledge and hopefully have many others, I can also pass a a better understanding to others that may ask me.

I really don't see what the problem is.
Adblu is cheap enough, and I don't want any warranties invalidated on my merc :)

So Geo, reading Wargenwolfs link; I quote:

Does running out of AdBlue damage the engine?

No, the engine will not be damaged when you run out of
AdBlue. You can continue to the next AdBlue distribution
point or use your emergency supply at the next stop.
However the engine performance could be effected until you fill up.

You say it will, now I am confused
