4x4 Convertion (1 Viewer)

I have been thinking of having this done for awhile now. Living as we do in waterlogged Somerset I had a search around for a couple of specialist companies who can convert older vans. I found one in Bogtown in Devon, and another in Waterloo near Bridgewater,. Both offer the full works, conversion of gearbox and drive chain, new axle and prop, and automatic terrain drive selection. The one in Devon (Four by Fore Floaters) even offer a complete underseal in case of really bad flooding, they claim the van will float but I'm not sure I need to go that far. I will be happy just getting out of a boggy field without getting stuck. I'm told I can get a special discount If I place an order today.
Has anyone else had this modification done and was it worth it?

Ah, just noticed the date. Well done!

No, it is a 2000, I'm told convertions can be done on post 2000 models. Something to do with the collapsible waste water tank at the back..

Ok, lets be serious for a moment. Can motorhomes and camper vans be built onto a 4x4 chassis? Bet it would put another 10 - 15 k on the price.

Yes, Mercedes Sprinter is available in 4 * 4. I've seen a Globescout on that chassis.
And yes, at least!

Made bongos have a 4x4 setup ,they are not the biggest of vans . I don't know how to convert a two wheel drive to 4 wheel drive , have you considered snow chains for grip ? I've done a fair bit of off road driving and I've seen loads of people in 4x4 get stuck because they had road tyres fitted and not something like grizzly claws, 4x4 is not bullet proof against being stuck, I'd say that 50% of grip on soft surfaces is down to tyres , I've been thinking along the lines of sand boards and snow chains , if your mh is on soft boggy ground put boards down to spread the weight and the chains can be fitted when and if required ,hope this helps

My problem is that if I get stuck, who's going to pull me out

That would do it.

I did see one of these 8 wheel KATS stuck up to its Diffs in mud in Germany 2 years ago on a 4x4 rally. It was still there 5 days later and they had tried every vehicle available to get it out including larger trucks and tractors even two at a time .

I bogged a 6 * 6 Stalwart in once. They could actually swim in water but soft mud, or in my case a marsh meant zero forward progress. It did have a self-recovery winch, which would have been useful if there has been a tree near by to attach it to.

I drove one of them once, they have the steering wheel in the middle of a 3 seat cab Don't they?.

Yes, that's the one. They were famous for catching fire and the transmission couldn't cope with the wind-up which happened if it was driven on roads. Great looking vehicle, shame about the execution. Would have made the basis of a great MH if it had been reliable. Not sure I would have tried crossing the Channel in one though.
