Are you turning the key too soon ?

Tip from Geo....

When the heater symbol goes off the heaters are still working. Wait quit a bit longer until you hear a CLICK as the heater relay drops out.

Might be key recognition related
Turn the key on but not to start position
Wait a few seconds and turn off, then turn and start immediately

Check the cam sensor gap. Cant remember who it was but a member of fun had the same problem and said it was incorrect gap.

Thanks for all the suggestions will pass them on to the garage when it's in for a service.
If it's an easy inexpensive fix I'll get it done if,not I'll live with it.

Race van conversion for years
We had a 2005 did the same, had it checked, came up as a crank sensor to cam sensor anomaly, never a problem but a farmer pulling out in front of us was so never got it sorted.

possibly a little bit of diesel draining back overnight needs the first start to refill its amazing how things have progressed 30 years ago a diesel that started every time second try would have been a star, winter was one long battle with flaming rags and aerostart

Very unlikely with electric fuel pump. It should be up to pressure as fast as the glow plugs have finished.

As above, then turn off and repeat above, try starting after the second time of heating.
May be failing glow plugs or poor connections to same.
Good luck

Not my field of expertise but I've driven diesels long enough to know about glow plugs. Modern engines are so well designed that they eliminate the wait between turning the key and trying to start. I think I'd go with the flow and turn the key part way, wait a few seconds, then try. Failing that - live with it; there are enough big bills waiting without going looking for them.

possible bad earth strap, see techno's thread,

Yes. known fault and if original an old strap so well worth checking.

Voltmeter from battery neg to cylinder block, get someone to turn key and read voltage when cranking. Ideally you want zero.
