I'm a newbie
We know the limitations of the 'old' Fiat 2.8 TD 5 speed gearbox and its 'bad' ratios used on Hymer's, like mine, and many other early model motorhomes. I know they had around 127 bhp but will a new generation Fiat 2.3 multijet engine, 130 bhp, cut the mustard towing my race car trailer better than my Hymer does.

Does anyone have experience of both engines and their driving characteristics as I am looking for a new motorhome and keep ruling out the 2.3/130 bhp because I don't think it will cope. Therefore my option is to go to a more expensive and not so plentiful 3 litre 160 bhp unit.

Thanks
Peter

many many years! since I was a kid
I have driven both and the 2.3 is marginally better in my opinion. but not by much. the 3.0 iveco engine on the other hand is vastly better and pulls a car trailer effortlessly

The 2.3 130bhp motor will be fine for towing your race car and trailer, unless of course the motorhome itself is a large and heavy one. I tow my race car behind my 2.3 120bhp 2009 Ducato PVC, car and trailer total about 1500kgs and the motorhome is around 3400kgs loaded. Big hills knock the wind out her sails but its perfectly capable of cruising at 60 on the motorway. As an aside its averaging around 29mpg solo and 26mpg towing.

Why not go for the 2.3 150bhp. I changed from a 2.8JTD to a 2.3 150BHP and there is no comparison, especially on hills.
