I recall, and not long ago it was close to 1 :1 didnt quiet get there.
Birmingham was full of Spanish flying over to get some shopping bargains...

We bought our place in Benidorm in 2012 and I struggled to get 1.2 then so dont know why they keep saying its lowest since 1985 ???

When I was working in Marbella I was getting £1:€1.02 (early 2009). This was GREAT as I was sending much of my spare cash back to UK (a bit like some Europeans?). Also, although I was paying in to their Social Security system (National Insurance) my wife was ALSO entitled to free health care, cheap medicines etc. (a bit like some immigrants to our beloved country?).

Do I feel bad about any of that? NO!

However, those options may disappear in the near future (apart from the possibility of parity in the exchange rate?).

It's definitely been almost down to 1:1. I can't remember how many years ago that was. It was somewhere around 1.6 when the Euro came into common use at the start of 2002

I think they referring to the exchange rate with the US $, rather than the Euro €.

But as usual the media is trying to make out matters are MUCH worse than they are... at the moment. For example, few commentators mentioned that the FTSE 100 closed significantly higher on Friday, than at the end of the previous week. Admittedly, it's dropped some more today - but it is the nature of these things that there will be volatility in the markets for some time.

I got €1.04 back in 09 I believe. I remember about that time I got one visit where it was so close to parity I didn't bother doing any maths.

The £/$ the lowest I can remember was $1.36 I seem to recall it was around the time of the .com bust but I can't remember for certain. I was an importer back then so remember $ prices fairly well.

I bought some from the PO about three years ago for 1.06, but I am reknown for dong everything at the wrong time, took a fixed rate mortgage in 2007, invested in banking shares early in 08, bought some investment property in 06, still not worth what I paid then and so it goes on

Then I bought a Hymer o_Oo_Oo_O

You need to understand how the uk economy works to assess if it is bad or not ( and I'm not saying I am an expert) but I know that the ftse100 is always high when the value of the £ is low. It's not something that directly relates to our economy, it's mostly foreign businesses who do well when we don't. The ftse 250 is more indicative of the state of our economy and since brexit it has dropped 14%, which, as reported is very bad for the UK

As to the $, oil prices are set in dollars, so a low $ exchange rate means the cost of oil goes up, which means petrol, diesel, heating oil, LPG etc costs go up.

Stocks and shares have lost a lot of ground too. House builders and other stock exposed to the housing market will be seriously negatively impacted.
Persimmon homes ( the UKs biggest house builder) lost 28% on Friday and another 14% today.
Coupled with the poor exchange rate, which means all foreign travel and imports will be hit ( we import more than we export) I think the media is about spot on, it all sounds pretty bad to me.

Exactly why it would've been a disaster to be shackled to the €... Our economic cycles completely at odds with our (ex) European partners.
Nevertheless, stock prices are about 'confidence' as much as fundamentals...
Our stock market has fared no better nor worse than the others around the world, indeed German & French markets have had bigger falls.
If everyone expects the markets will fall, they will - some canny investors will make a bundle on undervalued shares.

When they first came out it was 1.50 to the pound, lowest was nearly parity, so it's not too bad at the mo.
there was a time you could get 1.60 to the pound .
the pound as dropped alot over the years at one time i remember 300 or so pesatas to the pound when spain went euro it was about 250 to the pound later it dropped in 2008/9 to almost 1pound 1 euro so like now the pond had dropped almost 50%from in the 1960,s .
spain etc was really cheap to visit then .

It was only around 2009 where it was about par 1-1.
According to official figures, back in 2009 it went below 1-1 and £20 would get €18. Best I got was just around 1.02.
Apparently the highest was €1.42 but there's always blips.
