Elder brother had a 500 Norton with just the chair frame on, when I started my apprenticeship at Reavells the same firm he worked for, he gave me a lift to work, it was my job to climb out on the frame and grab the sidecar wheel to stop us turning over. Looking back I must have been stupid, I slip and I would have been in deep do do. He eventually made a sidecar for it out of oiled hardboard and softwood, and then he got a job elsewhere, but by that time I had my own bike anyway.

My BIL had a Norton Dominator99 with a single seat Watsonian sidecar attached, we took the body off and attached a door! to the chassis as a platform, we rode it to Snetterton on the Saturday practice day, then joined in on the sidecar practice session, with me as passenger, we were hopelessly outgunned down the straights, but made up for it in the corners,
I never knew an old Norton 99 could Rev so hard, right next to my ear, kept going though, the things you do when you are young and carefree( read stupid)!.

Not a criticism of anyone's skills, but I thought here was the best place to post this. I bet we all know someone we could send it to. :xgrin:

Just caught up on the Stan Dibben story.
What great footage of Spa and what a great philosophy of life he has!
Reminds me of my dear old dad,who used to ride behind me till his late 70's all over Europe till one day he said " sorry son, can't get my leg over any more". I laughed my head off but he didn't realize the double meaning!

thought the back end on the bottom one was awful... till i realised it was 2 bikes.

Never had a proper 2 stroke road bike, other than my AP50 and my YB100 yamaha. All my mates had them, but i had a bad racing habit to fund.

However, i am not unknown to them

I don't know what Is saddest... the fact that you posted that, or that I have already seen it.

Nice! Do you machine all of the kit, or buy some bits in?

Often thought that if I ever got a bit of money I would open up a small machine shop, but I would have to go something to compete with you.:) Nice work. Is that a vane pump?

Returned 2010
I used to marshal mainly at Snetterton in the sixties, became friends with some of the sidecar racers, Pat Millard always used to borrow our mallet to drive in his tent pegs, we helped Camathias working on his outfit before racing commenced, Chris Vincent, Colin Seeley, Terry Widdecombe and Pip Harris were all regulars in those days, we would camp in our tent in the paddock alongside them regularly. Happy. days. The mixed aroma of Castrol R and frying bacon is still one of my favourites.

We would often be at Brands as spectators as it was our family outing with Mum & Dad I would be passenger in the Monza sidecar. I would really look forward to the sidecar races Bill Boddice being one of my favorites, & then I think Owen Greenwood came along with a contraption that caused a bit of a fuss especially when he won everything.
I seem to remember being there on the day that Camathias came out of Clearways & totaled on the start & finish straight - a sad day.

Regards

Arthur

OK that has done it I think we have enough members on here to start a MHF sidecar team,
We need to be sensible due to our age so need to set some paramiters IE no engines more than 1000cc and you must be over 60 yeaars of age, twice the weight you were at 20 years of age and half as agile.
If any one has any other stipulations please feel free to add it to the list.(y)
