First moho 11/2013, second 11/2014 current from 09/2019.
Hi, I want to add some led lighting above the cupboards running off the 12v. Ideally with a dimmer and remote control. No flashing multi coloured lights needed - just plain old white. I have looked on eBay and Amazon and there are hundreds of makes and kits. Just want the led on a roll, will cut it up and run off seperate 12v supplies around the van. Are you able to recommend anything?
Thanks Martin

Our local boot sale sells the rolls for £5 or £7.50 for waterproof ones.
The wires are sold separately for 50p each. :)

I had some cheapo stuff in the garage but it would not stay stuck up and after about 3 years about 50% of the LED's were dead, the plastic coating had gone very brittle.

I now have something more expensive from Aten lighting but of course it will be a while before I know the difference, knowledgeable and helpful if you want to talk to somebody.

Another shout for ATen lights .They are on web and at shows.Having bought some from Ebay before, and having them get very hot to the point of smoking,I personally won't buy off net.I know lot's of people have with no problems,But from a personal level if I had not been in the van I think they would have ignited.

If you are not au fait with a soldering iron just buy a length of 12v LEDs with input leads soldered in place.

You don't need an encapsulated (plastic coated version) version as they are being used inside. Any supplier will do i.e Maplin etc, but use ATen if you don't mind paying a pretty penny more.

Instead of shelling out for a remote I would simply replace one of your existing switches with a dimmer/switch like the thumbnail...

Will any LED strip dim?

Martin
(excluding mains tape) Yes. All LED strips operate on a constant voltage. Mostly 12v DC, although some systems are designed for 24v DC.

and while @hilldweller 's dimmer is cheap it's not c-line or CBE so won't be a straight forward replacement for a switch in your MH - do shop around though the CBE style may be cheaper elsewhere

The dimmers are actually potentiometers as they are only dimming the 12v DC supply from your habitation battery. So dimming just cuts the voltage to reduce the light output.

All simple stuff, all low voltage and all easy enough to install without doing yourself or your mh any harm.

when you have decided who to get the leds from (mine are cheap chinese) have a look on ebay for 'led strip profile' it makes for a better looking finish unless you are hiding them out of sight behind a pelmet.

Aten Lighting are brilliant. They made up an LED strip for me consisting of 4 small LED lengths, for a ceiling uplighter I was making for my Burstner.
I thought they were really helpful, bloody good price and provided a 3 day turnaround.
