Yep, thats about what we have experienced over the years, but I didn't know about swing side windows...
We shall just keep doing what we do and move on politely when asked...

Having a satellite dish raised on the roof can be classed as camping as we found 3 years ago in Spain. We were otherwise parked. We had a Guardia office point it out nicely to us. He didn't make us move, just pointed it out. He made it plain it was a 48 hours max for parking. If you park in a marked parking area, you must park within the lines, not across them. Putting a step or anything else out and/or leaving a built in step out, it is also classed as camping.

The problem is many are not legally parked, nor are they "parked"!
Agree totally just drive along the road from Cabo to the lighthouse they have generators, chairs bikes and al sorts outside.
Unfortunately we all get tarred with the same brush because of a few selfish people

With the greatest respect to that very nice , gun toting, cigar chewing, sunglasses wearing Guardia Officer, he was talking out of his hat, (and I'm not criticising you in the slightest for you obeying his 'instructions'.)

It's evident, from reading the Edict issued by the Ministry that anything that obstructs or creates a space outside the horizontal parameters of the van is contrary to parking, ie step, side opening windows, doors etc, but, if it allowed to use the space above your van ie skylights, rooflights etc. that doesn't impinge on the public space, what has a satellite dish got to do with the Guardia.
The answer of course is nothing.

I have nevered bothered reading about what is "legal" or "breaking the law" as far as motorhoming is concerned.

Folk pay expensive lawyers because laws are often so complicated that normal people can't hope to understand them properly.

There is a huge difference between what is "against the law" and what is generally allowed.

What I take great care about is not behaving in any way that might upset the locals. If local people complain then the police tend to act.

I understand it is illegal to live in your van on the side of the road in Blighty but I did it for years and years. Nobody complained so I was left in peace.

Over here in the Algarve, one thing that does seem to annoy some locals is when off-site motorhomers crowd together in considerable numbers. Even then, it is sometimes tolerated if other locals are happy with the business these visitors bring in.

I have had several "meetings" and discussions with local Portuguese boys in "blue" over the years, and I am totally convinced that their attitude to me is largely dependent on mine to them.

I suspect that any visitor who holds the (ridiculous) attitude that foreign, gun toting police are only after upping their income by fining innocent tourists, especially if it is near the end of the month, are the exact same folk who are more likely to get fined and/or moved on.

I posted elsewhere on here about the (nice, friendly) Funster who was asked to move on from one spot by the GNR but allowed to stay until the following morning whilst his Brit neighbour was escorted off the place there and then because he started mouthing off about his rights and this and that.

It is just common sense...

It is not the rules and regulations that move a motorhomer off a parking place... it is a human being, albeit in a costume and having the means to kill you, that does so... and if he chooses not to, so be it.

Oh, and by the way, I am currently at the football club parking place in Armação de Pêra (€1.50) where "everybody" was given "fines" and moved off two days ago...

Guess what?

Not everybody at all.

If you are here and you want to sit outside your van to sun yourself, might I suggest you do so on the vast, empty beach 70 metres away and not by your van.

PARKING means parking.
