So.

Thursday lunchtime we drove away from the Castleton CC site after our 2nd single test night in the new and first motorhome.

All went swimmingly. Well apart from little girl (2 years 1 month old) not been happy at the 2nd outing into the village for dinner on the same day. Think she had ideas of watching Frozen on he iPad. (dam Disney and there heroine quality cartoons)

We had a few more items with us this time from our snag list the 1st night to make life easier.

Cue Leveling ramps.

Now it was not 100% level and maybe we could do with some bigger ones for the odd site but it was close enough to be comfortable so were going to run with them for a while to see if we manage.

We found a really nice spot in the top corner. Away from the main road for quite again and only a min to the shower blocks which I made full use of this time now I have my rubber slippers on board.

I can't praise the facilities enough of the site for first time users. And I have almost zero gripes. But in order for balance and places improving facilities I will list a small one.

The plastic toilet seat.

The seat should always cover the cold porcelain bowl. Not just for comfort and warmth but I hate my skin touching the bowl. I always give the seat a good clean with baby wipes or the like and I hate touching the bowl.

Rant over. Awesome site.

Setting up was a lot quicker this time because beds were made from last time and cupboards stocked. Although I need to think about winter storing methods. We will still be using the van in winter so want everything as ready as possible but we don't want cold and damp ruining stuff as could likely be a couple of weeks between use.

But as I say set up was really quick so I added a seat outside to be able to use while rest of family faffed to go out and I could create space. I even clipped in the external shower which I will probably refer to as the dog shower from now on. He did not use it this time as it was a little baltic. But nice to test it out.

We then trotted off to the shops in Castleton and ended up buying a really nice coloured glass lampshade for the main living room light (at home)(big light if your a peter kay fan)

Had the usual cheeky pint in the Castle then headed back for a couple of hours to just enjoy the van. Did a bit of tinkering and generally settling a few bits in. Decided we need some little shelfs up in the kitchen area for spices and oil and stuff when cooking. How do you fit stuff like that and where are others buying it from? needs to be light I guess. Plus fitting into the softer walls. How does that go?

In the evening the missis was shattered and went to bed after the little girl went down so I decided to have a beer and play with some dinosaurs before reading/looking through all the manuals it came with and checking where service stamps go etc..

We all slept really well. Little girl woke about 7am so mum got up and they watched Peppa Pig on the iPad and I got up at 8am to cook breakfast for us all while mum took a walk to see the Ducks with Abigail.
Forgot the Sausages  So it was bacon and egg sandwiches.
Thats when I realised we need a toaster! I like toasted bacon sandwiches.

We then unhooked all the external gear and removed the internal window blinds. Boy did the side window silver ones have some condensation behind them! Think we will be investing in some external ones. I guess that will stop condensation and help insulate the van better on cold nights to save some gas on the heating.

Lowered off the ramps and then headed back home via Towsure leisure in Sheffield again to pick up a couple of snag list items and then big one! The TV!!!!!!

Wifey said that we need a TV. This after I was told to hold off spending money on it over Christmas

I decided I would just go look at what they had without asking prices and then buy it. My logic was to take emotion out of the equation and get what we would be really happy with. I figured maybe £30 for the bracket and £220-£250 for a screen.

Well I was wrong....... nearly double for the screen!!! Thankfully wife was out of ear shot at the till so I just handed over my card and thought about the extra shifts ill be pulling in summer to not feel to guilty at the cost to watch BBC news.

Its worth it in my eyes though. Built in DVD and Sky Decoder (for when/if we get a dish. Nice LED screen. 3 year warranty and detachable for safety when not using the van.

So plan going forward is were booked at the Durham CC site for 2 nights over New Year so we can stretch the legs a little and have a better longer test. And watch TV ;)

From there not sure the next trip but we have started the planning for 11nights away in April over to Europe. Looking like France. Switzerland and Germany (Thinking Porche factory tour (y))

But all is going well... Working nicely through the snag list with no issues causing us any real problems this far and looking forward to new year :)

Picked up a set of nice towels today in Next Home so less to take from the house and making it more turn key lets just go with minimal planning/prep work as thats the plan for it. Grab Bacon Beer and Bread and hit the road.

Happy Camping folks.
Dave.

p.s. we also got a toaster ;)

in reply to the extra shelves bit, be very sure you need them before fitting, it may not be as easy as at home as you have already suggested, but do you really need another load of stuff to get out and put away each time. A box of herbs and oils in a cupboard, get out when cooking, put away when done (y)(y)

I fully support your toilet logic, at home we have just paid for a new suite and closed the toilet looks lovely with the lid capping the seat, but when lifted it leaves nearly an inch of cold porcelain for the legs o_O

and yes you need bigger ramps :):)

carry on enjoying, then carry on telling us, can't beat a story with photos for me (y)

PPS you don't need a toaster o_O

I'm another doubter re your shelves. if you want to make better use of your storage you could check put an old post by @Techno on cupboard storage modifications.

Nice post though and it's great to see you're loving the van. Have a great New Year in Durham. We'll be on a CL in Durham over the new year.

We carry a small bottle of cooking oil but keep it in a zip lock bag just to cut down on drips and stains, spices etc go in a small plastic basket (The Range) that sits on the worktop when cooking then back into the cupboard afterwards.
When you go for a sit down job and sometimes the end of your "gentleman's bit" touches the porcelain, that area of the toilet is referred to in sanitary ware circles as "the cheese board" (y)

You'll be fine in SW France when you meet "a la Turque" facilities, only the soles of your feet risk touching anything although a horse might have a problem.

Love that TV and the bottle of beer looks cool too. We hardy use levelling ramps on most campsite grounds in the UK. Someone one once said as long as the wine doesn't spill out the glass then it's level enough and that sort of hits a tune with me. We do try and keep the van reasonably level so the fridge works as well as it should and have yet to have a problem. As you do more you will gain more experience and my advice would be, go for it as soon as possible. Perhaps a short trip into France and back just to build up your knowledge and experience.

We were once in France and the loos were all in a row, about ten of them facing towards the pitches. They were unisex and had no seat or lid! They did have a door though.

Hi David. Glad your outing went so well. Did you buy the Avtex? I'm not aware of any TV with a Sky decoder built in. The TV will have a FreeviewHD and Freesat receivers which is not Sky. I'm sure other Funsters will confirm this or tell me I'm talking total cr@p. There is a Common Interface Slot though I don't know if this accepts a Sky type card. Not something I have ever used.

Not full satellite as in put your viewing card in but can pick up satellite channels. I think if you have the new Sky Q you can use your home set up without a box though?

I really would have to play with it properly to know. It was the TV and DVD part we wanted it for mainly. Anything else is just a nice bonus and there was a lot of sales talk from the guy in the shop... I just thought its a nice size nice clear screen and has DVD so we will take it.

Can you not toast on the grill?
Have you tried 'half toast' bacon sandwiches? Much better and much less mess.

I did do some toast on the grill and did think one side toasted would be ok for sandwiches. Great minds eh.

I just really like toast and its hassle free in a cheap low volt toaster. My wife likes the gas turned off when we are not using it on the oven in case the little girl turns it on by accident so the toaster saves any faffing on a night if I fancy a cheeky slice before bed...... With Raspberry Jam (y)

What is that thing you are holding in your avatar ? is it a young child ?
We see more mobility scooters and bath chairs than children on Funster meets.
Nice to see a future Funster.

It is indeed my little girl. Its a year old photo but a nice one.
I did notice on the site that we seem to be the younger ones at the moment
Hopefully the cast of Cocoon won't frown on a young family sharing the lovely sites with them

Don't get a cheap low wattage toaster. Neither use nor ornament as they say. Slots aren't big enough for a decent slice of bread or wide enough for a proper barm cake. We have had and got rid of two. Trying one of those grill tray things at the minute. Only 650 watts. Ok you can only do one side at once but will toast/ warm any type or thickness of bread.

Good choice. We have the same one. Really pleased with it. We carry a tripod and dish so we can always get TV. Get the Satfinder app and you will be able to see if there is any obstruction to your signal before you set up. Enjoy, Mike

I've never heard of a low volt toaster. A 240 V will be at least 1000W - that's about 100A through an inverter - it will murder the batteries'.
Probably best saved for when you are plugged in.

You are right to be worried about gas but modern campers and caravans all have the flame out device fitted, so she is never likely to turn the gas on.

Have you tried Sutherland's potted meat - spread, then toasted? An amazing Yorkshire delicacy.

Flameout? I have not tried to turn them on and leave on without hitting ignition. Ill have a play. It may help the wife relax in the day but 100% she will still want it off on a night. She's a bit of a worrier.

Well I have to say it all worked perfectly.

2 rounds of toast and jam complete.
I bought a smaller loaf from the local Tescos and the slices are a perfect fit :)
