Looks like Fiat have done some serious work on the Torque Nm of the new Euro 6 150bhp 2 engine…it's up 30Nm compared to the Euro 5+...so 380Nm Vs 350Nm and now only 20Nm less than the 180bhp at 400Nm...is it worth paying more for the 180bhp?

Much better torque curve on the 180. And it doesn't have a timing belt :).

Yes it does Tony, the new Euro 6 180 (177bhp) is the same 2.3 engine as the 130 and 150 versions. I suspect it may run a bigger turbo/possibly revised can timings but its still the same 2.3 engine.

The big difference with the new 180 engine is max torque occurs over a much wider band of revs compared to the 150. This means a lot less gear changing on hills.

Reading the brief blurb it looks like the 150 and 180 have a variable vane turbo ... if it's like the Ford engines I was told the higher powered engines had different injectors but never confirmed that..
Point is we are looking at two more or less identical engines...
Which are just running different maps to achieve different drive characteristics. ..
Looking at the curves it seems a no brained not to get the 180... I'll bet it gives a far better drive feel and a lot less shifting down the box ..
Wonder what the difference in price is.. on the new Ford I'm sure I was charged around £1000 more for the higher output engine..
I was tempted to go for the cheaper variant and have it mapped, but as I was buying new didn't want to cloud any warranty issues..
Andy.

The 180 is around €2000 more than the 150. A lot of dish considering how well the existing 150 performs we have gone for the 150 on the new van. We have 150 euro5+ on current van no complaints pulls very well, so should be happy with the euro6 version.

Thanx for your input guys...and yes the same 2.3L engine with timing belt now used across the Euro 6 range...
Looking at the new 2.0L Transit EcoBlue engine which uses AdBlue and comes initially in 104bhp, 128bhp and 168bhp
Again different turbo's and mapping's I guess to achieve the outputs and all in smaller 2.0L engine block...

Personally I just don't like the idea of fitting smaller and smaller capacity engines to achieve the same or even higher outputs...
It's just an age thing and most probably be told I'm old fashioned lol..
My chausson has the Ford 2.2 engine producing around 155bhp.
It's certainly powerful enough but you do need to be shifting down to climb hills and get it up to speed.. I'm going to stick with it for now but my mk7 transit camper is similar output from the 2.4last engine and feel more responsive and a nicer drive... I accepthink the final drive ratio is different..
70mph in the chausson in top... 2000rpm
70mph in mk7 and your on 3000rpm
Andy.

It will be interesting to know your comparisons once you have one. Are they on similar size and weight bodies?

Being an old school diesel head I cannot help wondering what the life expectancy would be of these small, high powered diesel engines. I once owned a Dodge ram with the old Cummins 5.9 B series engine and when I sold it on it had coming up to 450000 miles on it and still going strong. 190 BHP from a 5.9 litre, 6 cylinder low revving engine compared with the same power from a lump of less than half its size. Are these modern engines reliable, or is it just another disposable item.

Just found this thread whilst researching 150 bhp versus 180 bhp.
The 2.3 180 bhp apparently has different pistons and a different crankshaft to the 150 hp. Still seems like an expensive upgrade at £2000.

Is the 150hp adequate in a 4500kg motorhome?
Bearing in mind that, looking at the torque and power curves above, at 2500rpm the 150 is developing about 125bhp and the 180 about 145bhp. Perhaps the 180 is just easier to drive and requires less gear changes but if Comfort-matic is doing the changing, does that matter?

For my 3500kg PVC, I decided the Euro6 150hp upgrade and the comformatic gearbox was adequate - I couldn't justify the extra for the extra upgrade to the 180hp motor. I'm afraid I cant comment on its ability to move a 4500kg

I'll find out in the next couple of weeks.:D
I was always pleased with the 130 in the last van only had the 150 in the current van as the 130 was not recommended with the Comformatic. Been very pleased with the 150 definatly better than the 130 but not essential so 150 should be fine in the heavier new van.

I agree. The 150 does have lots of grunt. Ours is in an extra high top PVC plated at 4500kg and has power to spare.

there are other mechanical differences i suspect - the 180 motor has a timing chain vs a belt on the 130/150hp motor. there may be a bigger turbo? perhaps a variable pitch turbo to overcome lag of a bigger turbo? higher compression cylinders etc and a different ECU -

Looks like I was wrong, can't find any info to confirm but looking at pictures of the engines there is no belt cover like on the 130 & 150, If I had known that I might have gone for the 180.

@gerry mcg When I posted your pic wasn't showing.
Hang on a min that info is the 3Lt. As @gus-lopez says look like it is a belt.

Getting confused now must be time for a G&T.:D

All three are belts now... it says so in the spec in post 1,

Hello everyone.
We can not see the coparatives pictures of the torque/power from the 130/150/180 hp 2.3 multijet.
I can't found them on the web.

May hell boy repost the picture on the forum?

Thank a lot,

Thomas

We have had 3 150bhp 2015 manual was ok
A 2017 comfortmatic noisey and to be honest pretty flat, and now a 2019 manual and its performance is a revelation much quicker and with only 200 miles on the clock the fuel consumption matches the other two.
All 3 vehicles weighed roughly the same.
