Asking for advice / help.
I have a Bailey 740 3850 kg (uprated) with a train weight 5500 kg.
I want to tow a 1100 kg trailer.
I have correct license.
The 740 has a Peugeot 2.3lt 130 BHP engine.
Assuming the 740 and trailer are running at their max weights, will the engine / gear box / clutch be ok pulling this weight?

From your information the weight you intend to tow is well within the recommended gtw of your motorhome so should be no problem.

Our previous van a Burstner Aviano i727 had the fiat 130 Hp engine with a manual box,we towed the smart car on a trailer and it coped okay albeit in the gorges region a lot of gear stick stirring was needed but nothing mental.

I have the same van Bailey 740 also uprated to 3850 kg gvw and tow a Citroen C1 on an A frame with no problems at all. Engine pulls well and fuel consumption not drastically increased.

The 2.3L 130BHP engine is more than capable of hauling your vwhicle and trailer at max weights. Our last van was a '96 Iveco Daily with 100BHP and a GVW of 4200KGs, I regularly towed a 1500KG trailer behind it and although big hills would baulk it it managed quite well in general. The 2.3 has a lot more low down torque than my old 2.8 Iveco did and torque is what matters, the oldest saying in the motor industry is "torque turns wheels".

Its capable of towing up to, and most likely beyond, its train weight of 5500kg or it couldnt be plated at that weight so where the problem.

Hi Vic your van is the same weight as my hymer 3850kg i have ducato 2.8 engine in mine, i tow a boat with the van at 1150kg the train weight is 5500kg that will only gives me 500kg for luggage that i can carry in the van you cant exceed the 5500kg train weight limit plus you need a C1 Licence to drive above 3500kg van hope that helps (y)

Neither can you exceed the gross vehicle weight.

Your calculation is unfortunately wrong....you have an extra 500kg to place on the TRAILER (assuming the trailer is plated to that weight) , not the van.
You cannot add to the gross vehicle weight just because the train weight is below maximum.

sorry, yes that's right 500kg on the trailer but can't exceed the combined weight my apologies, also the trailer needs to be loaded & balance right because assuming the van is loaded to 3850kg max & there's to much weight on the Tow hitch on the trailer could also put the rear axle on the van overloaded it all depends how you load the trailer & balance it right (y)

Recently recovered a Car on a trailer using the M-H. The trailer is rated for 2tonne, (and as you can imagine it is "Well Built") though I was within my "Train". It Coped entirely satisfactory. Home to Alrewas, and back, had to drop it into 3rd on a couple of M1 Gradients. 2.3Ducato.
