Toying with taking Hetty to Rome next October. Few questions if I may please?
  • Is 2 weeks enough (still wage slaves sadly)
  • We fancy going down via Belgium/Germany and back via France. That practical? Easier to get to Hull than Dover (and I HATE that drive)
  • Is October a reasonable time of year to visit?
  • I reckon 3 days each way once over the channel - that sound about right?

Sort of depends on how well you "do" Rome. But certainly it's better than not going at all.

Make a note of Camping Tiber.

It would be all too easy to allocate two full weeks there and overdose or get bored.

One problem though, what you pass to get there. Pisa, Florence, Garda. We prefer Florence to Rome by a long way. Pisa is worth a day there.

We went to Rome in October this year
I would allow 5 days to get there and the same to get back. I'd suggest using the toll roads in Italy as the free ones are pretty dire.
Weather in October was fine for sight seeing
If time allowed I'd also suggest visiting Sorrento and Pompei

@moho ~ that rather puts things into perspective.

I think I`d try and give it at least three weeks, but as a fellow wage slave I know how frustrating it is, all these wonderful places and no time !
Roll on retirement

Thinking outside the box - how about flying to Rome and staying in a hotel for a long weekend, then taking the Motorhone somewhere a bit closer to home. Dordogne is meant to be nice in October

It would be a lot if driving and lack of time to see other places on the way / on return journey.
I'm also in the Florence camp--- beautiful city, love it whereas Rome is "like".
The fly/ short break in hotel and use motorhome for a more leisurely holiday in France is a great idea @Robert Clark and. The one I'd go for.

Don't know about journey times - but I spent 4 days there recently and that was enough to tick the major boxes.
My greatest tip is to Pre-book all the 'attractions' you want to see.
Got to see much more of the Vatican & Coliseum that way - and saved hours of queuing.
