f you Google Since I download the latest win 10 update the computer wont shut down, I have to press the power button you will find a number of suggestions.

Thanks for that but they are all a bit type specific. I think I'll have to try a clean rebuild of Win 10

I have a new laptop but having heard early pre-release doubts about 10 I had 7 installed. I am a gold plated techknob so could any of the techies tell me how to stop/ supress/delete/destroy the constant intrusive 'offers' to download Windows 10 for free. However good 10 is I will remain using 7 at least until MS stops supporting it. I imagine that by that time (early 2020) it'll be Windows 17 anyway.:)

it can be destroyed but involves uninstalling a list windows updates..

before upgrading, I just hid the w10 nagging icon .. less likely to screw up.

Many thanks Jim, I did get rid out of the tray but every time I boot it puts a full screen ''''''' Go on you know Windows 10 is your geatest desire:D........................Grrrrh! No chance right now and 7 is such a doddle, even for me!

this was sent to me by @Gellyneck but I never tried it as I upgraded soon afterwards

Do this at your own risk! I take no responsibility if it screws up!
  • Open Windows Update.
  • Change Settings. Make sure Install updates automatically ....... is not selected. I have Check for .......... selected! Click OK.
  • Installed Updates from bottom of left pane.
  • Right click the update to be uninstalled.
  • Click Uninstall.
  • You will get a "Restart Now message" after some of the updates but click Restart Later until all uninstalled.
  • After last uninstall done click Restart Now
  • Machine goes away and does it's thing. Takes a while so don't panic.
  • Once it's restarted run Windows Update again and be horrified that it will say "Never been updated" (or similar)!
  • Run Check for updates and this will rebuild your history and show the updates you've just uninstalled.
  • Hide all the "Nagging updates"
  • Re-run Windows Update again and it will still show some of them! This is because Microsoft sneakily reissues some of the nagging ones every month!(n)
  • Hide all the "Nagging updates" and re-run Updates until it shows no updates and your done.(y)
List of updates I've uninstalled (note some of them are for Windows 8 \ Server 2012 only). Remember you need to keep checking they don't reappear the following month. Some new ones may also appear.(n)

Add KB3102810 and KB3107998 to the above list (passed to you by @ScotJim). They haven't been confirmed as tracking updates as yet but do look suspect. Either way they are not critical security updates anyway.

Microsoft extended support for 7 is until 14 January 2020 ..

Tried 10 and didn't like it, so rolled back..

would still be on XP if it were supported..
which I have it on another machine to run software that won't run on 7

Did the same, lots of hours wasted and found win 10 still very unstable and Gb's hungry:( on returning to win 7 found all restore points wiped, live mail completely bo****ed up, with all live mail messages dumped in a big heap. Fortunately I was able to get back to normal with a system image restore backup I had made earlier. The word is that there will be a major 10 update next month to iron out still existing bugs. I have found win7 to be the best so far allthough I was quite happy with win 3.1 :D:D:D:D:D that was after retiring my lovely IBM 20Mb and still miss the lovely whirring sound of that drive starting up.

I found lots of guides on Google. You need the guide on screen to do it. But basically it's uninstall one of the regular fixes you've received.

How long this will work is anyone's guess.

These are the ones (without further checking) that prompt for Windows 10 "upgrade" however the others in the bigger list are tracking updates that send info to Microsoft. I decided"sod that" and removed them as well.
305583 has more than one iteration so you need to be careful it doesn't reappear again on the update list and slips through the net!

If you've uninstalled the updates shown in previous posts check in Windows Explorer to see if a file called GWX.exe is still showing in C: (assuming a default installation of Windows 7) /Windows/SysWOW64.

If it's still there that's what will be giving you the Windows 10 icon and you need to remove this to stop the icon appearing. Not overly complex but it isn't as simple as deleting the file as you need to take ownership of the folder. I'll PM you outline instructions if you want to try this.

If all else fails use a flame thrower. In reality it could be the only way. They can slip one up us without us feeling a thing, it's date rape.

For those FUNsters fighting Microsoft's nagging to update to Windows 10 be aware there appears to be another iteration of KB3035583, the update that installs GWX which gives the nagging message, released by them.:sneaky:(n)
Open Windows update, right click the entry and left click hide update.(y):)

Can I go back from W10 to W7?
If so could somebody tell me how please.
I cannot get the "start" box to appear on 10 so can do absolutely nothing. Can't even switch off.

And on another thread, can I move iTunes from laptop to a flash drive so I can get my toons in the Moho. (Assuming I can open the W10/7)

The Windows symbol is there in white. Hover over with mouse and changes to blue, left click and nothing.
R click, same response. Also no time showing bottom right, and all the little symbols along the bottom are missing

Is your screen resolution set wrongly so the taskbar is off the bottom of the screen?

Starting from the left
Windows icon then search the web and Windows then a small box with ears then nothing till far right and a little box saying notifications.
There is no response from any of these icons (left or right click).
There used to be a few icons between web search and notifications but now just a black box full width
Thanks
