:xThumb: A very helpful email ;
Received from Gloucester Tourist board

With regards to events taking place over New Years Eve, there are a lot of fabulous opportunities to see in the New Year in style, however, most events will require tickets. Below you’ll find a comprehensive list of events taking place in the Gloucestershire area over New Year with details and prices included:

you are in an ideal location to reach various points of interest within Gloucestershire via public transport. I will pop a few timetables in the post for you so this should arrive with you in a few days. The timetables will include the Stagecoach 94 service which is a direct service between Gloucester and Cheltenham and stops a short distance from Briarfields Camping and Caravanning Park, . I’ll also include the Stagecoach 71 which is a direct service from Gloucester to Tewkesbury, a lovely town just outside of Gloucester. There are also several services from Gloucester and Cheltenham to Stroud and Painswick, both of which are worth a visit as they are very quaint little towns with lots of local and independent shops and produce.
With regards to Gloucester Docks, it is open 24/7 but Gloucester Quays Outlet Centre is open from 10.00am – 8.00pm during the weekdays, 10.00am – 7.00pm on Saturdays and from 11.00am – 5.00pm on Sundays. I have also included a copy of the store guide in the post should you wish to explore this area further.
Whilst visiting Gloucester, there are lots of different attractions to visit including our historic Gloucester Cathedral which will be open throughout the festive season. There will be a Christmas in Gloucester guide included in the post for you to look at but in the meantime, should you wish to find out what else there is to visit in Gloucester, please visit our website at www.thecityofgloucester.co.uk. For more ideas on where to visit, please find some detailed information below to help you plan your itinerary.
Gloucester Cathedral
Probably one of Gloucester’s more famous landmarks, Gloucester Cathedral has been a wonder of our city for hundreds of years. The site itself has been used as a religious ground for over a thousand years and since then it has been host to many famous characters and historical events. The Cathedral has seen many changes over the centuries with its foundations being laid by the Abbot Serlo from 1072 when commissioned by William the Conqueror. William also commissioned the Domesday Book there in 1085 which is still used as an important historical source across the country today. Since then the Cathedral has seen many changes in architecture and appearance, religious belief and even use! Having Henry III crowned there in 1216 and Edward II buried there in 1327 has certainly heightened peoples interest in Gloucester Cathedral over the years. Other famed characters have included John Stafford Smith, the choir boy who eventually came to write the tune that the American national anthem is set to. It is hard to believe that the site where a Bishop of Gloucester was martyred by Mary Tudor is the same location as where some of the hugely successful Harry Potter movies were shot! You can find much more information on Gloucester Cathedral via the link below:
www.gloucestercathedral.org.uk
Gloucester Docks
The historic Victorian docks are a unique and inspiring destination, described by Charles Dickens himself as ‘extraordinary’. It was granted port status by Queen Elizabeth I in during her visit to the city in 1580. Gloucester is the most inland port in Britain, and the docks are dominated by towering warehouses which stand proud along the water’s edge. Visitors can see skilled shipwrights and riggers repairing, restoring and building traditional ships and rigging all year round in Tommi Nielsen’s dry dock on the West Quay.
The wider Gloucester Quays area is a favourite for visitors and locals alike, with a great mix of waterside museums, bars, cafes, restaurants and Designer Outlet shopping plus beautiful new communal squares, walkways and dramatic public art, all nestling comfortably alongside the docks’ maritime heritage. Follow the links below for more details:

You can also find the following museums in the Docks:
Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum
The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum is the place to go if you are interested in military history. The Gloucestershire Regiment has played a vital part in most of Britain’s campaigns for over 200 years. North Africa, Russia, Korea and France are just a few places in which ‘The Glosters’ earned their courageous reputation. The conduct in the face of immense dangers earned the regiment many awards and citations over the years. For more information please see the contact Details below:

Gloucester City and Folk Museums
Our City Museum allows you to start a historical adventure in chronological order! One of Britain’s most precious Iron-Age grave goods is on display here; an intricately designed Bronze Mirror was part of a collection of Grave Goods discovered on top of the highly liminal location of Birdlip Hill. The Mirror and the other artefacts were part of a female burial which is believed to of been the grave of a highly important woman of Pre-Roman Gloucester. The City Museum then goes on to teach visitors all about the Roman presence in Gloucester before showing the transition of other cultures such as Saxons and Normans etc.

The Folk Museum is aimed at educating visitors in Gloucester’s social and economical history. Set in what once was the famous Bishop John Hooper’s lodgings, a reformer Bishop who was martyred by Bloody Mary, the Folk Museum shows all walks of social life in Gloucester. With such exhibits from teaching of Gloucester’s part in the Civil War which provided a turning point for the parliamentarian campaign to the highly important practice of pin making and agriculture; you are sure to gain a fascinating insight into our City’s past.

History and Heritage
As well as the museums, dockside and cathedral, Gloucester hosts a plethora of historic sites that are well worth visiting when in the city. The town centre boasts many picturesque, historic churches such as St Mary de Crypt and St Nicholas that are opened up by members of the Gloucester Civic Trust throughout the year. These friendly and knowledgeable volunteers are based at St Michaels Tower, the remnants of a church located on the crossroads where the gate streets meet in the city centre.
Gloucester’s rich religious history has also left its mark on the city centre through the priories and friaries. Blackfrairs, regarded as one of the best preserved Dominican friaries in the whole of Northern Europe, is open from April through to September. With free admission it is one of Gloucester hidden gems that is not to be missed. A stone’s throw away, you’ll discover the remains of Greyfriars. This English Heritage property is open to explore all year and is made up of magnificent arches. And if exploring historic remains is of particular interest, a trip to St Oswalds Priory, originally commissioned by the Saxon princess Lady Aethelfled, would not disappoint.
Also waiting to be explored is the vast amount of historic pubs in Gloucester. The New Inn, regarded as the finest example of a medieval galleried inn in Britain, and the house of Robert Raikes, the Mr. Raikes being the founder of the Sunday school movement, are just a few to mention. Whether it’s for fine food and drink or just for an architectural nose, the pubs are key in conveying Gloucester’s past.
Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us further and we will endeavor to answer your questions. If not, I hope you have a wonderful visit to our city and if you need anything during your stay, do pop into our shop on Southgate Street where a member of our friendly team will be happy to help.

Hi All

If you turn left out of the campsite and walk up the road or get a bus as it a fair way, go as far as the new car garages on the right hand side and then just a little further on there is a left turning in to the Jet age museum, it was free to look around last year but they welcome donations and they have a cafe.
