Since buying Udo, he's never been equipped with any form of music player.

The 2.9 diesel donk isn't the last word in automotive audio delights either.

So, we decided that Udo needed a mixture of DAB and iPod with a good bassy shove to overcome the old-school drivetrain background noise.

I used a highly recommended audio specialist in Reading called John Kleis.

On their suggestion, they fitted an Alpine DAB head unit and separate subwoofer matched to two dash-mounted speakers.

The subwoofer sits in an unused alcove behind and to the side of the drivers seat.

The speakers have inbuilt tweeters and the control to the left of the steering wheel alters the bass-level and range of the subwoofer.

And you know what? It sounds bloody great!! Nicely loud, if needed, clear and with a good 'shove' from the subwoofer to add depth.

You know what else? DAB reception is pretty much perfect. There's a small Alpine windscreen stick-on antenna that is very effective.

This is all wired to a permanent live. Udo's engine battery charges via EHU and solar, so we can use it on-site without worry.

But.... I'm planning another element. John Kleis can mount two additional speakers near Udo's floor near the door with an additional amplifier. This will improve the sound rearward but also allow very effective outside usage as the speakers will aim that way.

I'll try and enjoy this setup first for a bit, though.

Good to see your looking after it :thumb:. Just as a point of interest, would you swop the RMB for something else, or would it have to be another RMB.

Very nice.....could have had a bigger subwoofer...

Following the for sale thread, I had a look on Mobile.de for RMB's and they really are quality product judging by the used values. It also solved a mystery..... For several years, taking the short cut to the A12 on my way in to work I passed and admired a mercedes based A class that I could not identify. Now sold and replaced with an Autotrail, but one of the pictures of the 2002 one one the website was identical. It was an RMB.

one day, I'll get to have a look inside one.........

Cheers and apologies for the hijack :sorry2:

I've become very attached to Udo. You were so right about the quality. The smell inside is like a gentleman's club. He doesn't rattle and everything is so well thought out. The stereo fitters were saying how good his control panel is.

I don't really want to have anything else.

But the one criticism that we all have is how little workspace there is when cooking. And how something a little longer may just have more living space.

I'm very drawn to an RV. The problem is getting something to fit my driveway. Udo fits well. We could handle a little more width and another few metres on length, but that's a small RV. So there's a solution but it also creates other new problems.

Considering what Udo cost me and how incredibly solid he is, I couldn't part with him. The extra I'd need doesn't justify our small criticisms.

A larger RMB? Pricey. Can't justify the extra cost.

But would I have another? Without a doubt!! As someone wise once said, 'there's no shortcuts to quality'. RMB proved it.

Subwoofer going for the generator record, eh? Hadn't thought of that! Maybe I could appear at a gathering with my subwoofer to blast out the nasty generator noises? AC/DC at full chat, anyone?::bigsmile:

As I dont carry bicycles in the garage I have overcome the short work space by building a kitchen in one side of the garage. We do most cooking outside anyway. Cook did used to say there was not much work surface, but she seems to manage now she has got used to it. As we have the flat ceramic hob, we tend to use that as extra work surface, and the Senseo coffee machine sits on there nicely.

Bit of a tread resurrection, but found little on audio - I like the sub - did Udo get treated to the promised amp and rears @Bellini ?

Not yet, sir.

The only reason this hasn't happened yet is time as I've been working abroad a lot and haven't been at home much lately.

To be fair, though, the unit with the two speakers and sub as it currently stands provides enough power and sound even when parked for a little alfresco music (loud enough to be heard but not so loud as to be obtrusive to others). It's rather impressive with hardly any distortion at all. I suppose that's partly due to excellent quality equipment, but also the solidity of Udo's interior surfaces where the speakers and amp are mounted.

With more time, I'll add the rears and the additional amp to improve things even further.

That does look quality. Pilote have a vary good customer satisfaction rating. was only reading about it the other day when looking for info on Carthago faults for that suspicious thread. if you have a warranty fault their attitude puts many to shame....

We have a Pilote and love it. Not without it's faults but all the niggles have been very minor ones and the attitude of the dealer Hayes Leisure puts many to shame
