I know how it happened. The bloke in the top photograph with the purple T shirt stuck a screwdriver in the tyre and punctured it. Send him the bill. :)

You should have tried Fix and Fill, sure that would have worked. It does seem to have been a bit of a serious puncture, so you may have needed 2 tins.

Well done on the driving Mousy(y)

You mention going over the rumble strip on the motorway. When we bought our first van the dealer gave me a tip to use my wing mirror to check the position of the rear of the van and to keep inside the white line.

It's probably common sense, but it was news to me.

Well what can I say about Mont Blanc - it was very tall, a long way to the top and very cold once we got there! We felt decidedly ugly mingling amongst the staff as they all had golden tans, beautiful eyes, and lashes to die for, and that was just the boys! I think the job application stated, 'must be a beautiful person and have a GCSE in sardine packing' for the cable car attendant job role!

The long queue and decidedly whiffy trip up to the summit was worth it though, as on a stunningly beautiful, clear afternoon we looked out over the mountain range and saw climbers walking over the glaciers and scaling rock pinnacles.

Yes that it a person at the top of the rock!
image.jpg

We stared in wonder at birds hovering on air thermals, and then diving for crumbs dropped by Japanese tourists, before we encountered a bout of altitude sickness after climbing a few stairs for a photo opportunity! Finding no emergency oxygen and with leaden legs, pounding hearts and queasy stomachs we made our way back down, passing people hiking along the mountain trails, no doubt scoffing Kendal Mint Cake and singing about lowly goatherds.

On the way down in the cable car, we saw the roofs of our vans, which looked much cleaner than Johnny Foreigners!

As is the custom at all tourist spots, we exited through the gift shop, stopping only to buy the most tasteful of fridge magnets as a momento of a brilliant trip!

image.jpg

Dawn, lookin good in blue, naughty Martin with his hand out of the window, Cliff, (Ali G's Bro), and ever safety conscious me, the only one wearing protective headgear!

We left Chamonix and headed back to Annecy, a place I've always wanted to visit and I have to say didn't disappoint, arriving in time for a swim in the lake and a leisurely Al fresco dinner of 'Tortilla de restes' (left-overs omelette) washed down with rum and coke, and after dinner entertainment, when a couple in a tent forgot the age old adage 'people in tents shouldn't leave their lamp on'......

In closing, I may be forgetful but I can't remember Cheltenham looking like this the last time I was there......

Obviously not identical twin towns........

We struggle down Mont Blanc, gasping for breath, point the vans in the direction of Annecy and arrive in time for tea.
image.jpg

A quick set up in the meadow of camping Solitaire du lac and we all breath a sigh of relief. Home for a few days we reckon. We swim in the lake and initiate Cliff and Ger into the delights of pool noddles. They have come across them before but only as some tortuous way of keeping fit in their local swimming pool. We discover much to my amusement that although Cliff can swim, his body is incapable of floating and he needs 2 noddles just to keep his head above water.
image.jpg

It's hot, sunny and once again we are loving life, we cycle into Annecy where Geraldine makes a new friend, we feel it totally necessary to reward ourselves with beers and people watching.
image.jpg

I fancy an ice cream and we all giggle as Martin gives me €5 and says "get anything you want". 3 scoops of pistachio, salted caramel and mint chocolate later I'm a happy girl, but I've made the mistake of bringing 4 spoons to the table...considering 3 people allegedly didn't want any it disappeared pretty quickly!
Our perfect place, beer one side ice cream the other...
image.jpg

This dog was wilting in the heat so went on strike in this puddle, French lady had no chance of moving him on, many gestures and shouting from her friends, made me laugh.

Rain in Annecy pushes us South, whilst it would have been lovely to stay longer, sitting in the van in the rain is not what we want, we get enough of that at home.
We drive south and stop at an aire in Montelimar home of the nougat.

The aire is at the bottom of a steep slope with lots of trees, great for shade not so good for manoeuvring vans into and around. we can't park next to each other but make do. We watch the other French vans and realise it's going to be ok to get the chairs and cadac out. We cook a group effort of paella, Ger stirring, Martin acting as windbrake and Cliff acting as supervisor.
image.jpg

Yummy yummy soon to be in our tummies..
image.jpg

We all enjoy a restful night but we are woken by a banging noise from the van next door, which has crept in close to us some time in the night....we now know where the phrase "don't come a knocking if the vans a rockin" comes from. We were impressed with both their sense of rhythm and endurance! Enough said..

We couldn't come to the world capital of nougat without visiting Nougat Land a slightly bizarre willy wonka type factory, shop and playground. Too much choice..
image.jpg

No ideal what they were looking for...

Aigues-mortes is a medieval fortified walled city, we went to the aire next to the canal that Cliff and Ger had stayed at previously only to find it shut. So we turned the vans back along the front of the wall and followed our noses to the new town aire.

image.jpg

We walked under the arch into the city to find rows of houses, shops and restaurants. Perfect shopping opportunities for Ger and I which had been lacking on this trip so far.
A few beers and euros spent later on dinky Provençal olive bowls, which I considered to be both a bargain and essential to our motorhome equipment. Martin and Cliff suggested that if we were "just gonna wander round" we do it on the top of the ramparts. So up we went, lovely views both across to the salt marsh, canal and shops below.

image.jpg

image.jpg

Low and behold by the time we walked all the way around, listened to Cliff relaying the audio guide and watched a few histrionic French videos all the shops were closing. A more suspicious wife than me would see a link there...

We retired to sit outside the vans for aperitif and starters...slivers of baguette topped with Brie and chilli jam, olives and cornichons. Refreshed we mossied back into town for supper. Now fellow Funsters this is were we should of eaten...
image.jpg

Instead we decided to amble off the beaten track where we were accosted by a beautiful French maiden who spoke very good English. It was a fish restaurant and we sat inside because Cliff had detected the dreaded Camargue mossie. We ordered from the menu but there was a feeling of a French faulty towers, all slightly chaotic with about 3 different people chipping in, we had to reorder as they didn't have some of our choices, it was early in the evening and they didn't seem to be wiping anything from the board and were still serving the other mostly French clientele.
The Chef/owner came out and we reckoned he'd been on the vino all afternoon. We sat with wide eyes and huge grins not quite sure what was going on.

Then we looked up...
image.jpg

image.jpg

We sat wondering what sort of establishment we were in and ordered another carafe of rosé. We were brought our starters of oysters, razor clams and mussels which were very good.
image.jpg

Cliff and Ger tried oysters for the first time and I explained to them that part of the thrill of eating them was wondering if you were going to see them again the next day as you are draped over the loo. Pretty waitress came and explained some of our mains were off.....and so were we, off down the road to another restaurant where we enjoyed a lovely meal.

image.jpg

We should of taken more notice of the waiter who gave us bottles of insecticide with yet another carafe of rose, yes you've guessed it the mossies made a meal of us too.

Just loving this again but I would be grateful if you could give us the name of the one with the magic ceiling. I can't decide whether to avoid it like the plague or take people there and casually glance upwards and await the reaction. Certainly didn't expect a report on travel in France to become pornographic.:sneaky:

Just as a PS to Mousy's account of our meal no.1 in Aigues Mortes, I didn't have to crane my neck to look at the very 'interesting' art work on the ceiling - they didn't see what was staring me in the face the whole time I was eating! It nearly put of me off my huitres and moules......!

No Phil, I think he still had the image of the mermaid in his mind....

We are having the best time ever, with Mousy's next report coming from St Tropez, home of the Mistral - which we are in the middle of - you will know all about this being the man who knows all there is to know about wind..;)

Ste Maxime beaches, whizzing by too fast on the bikes to hone in on the many topless women... Who Cliff and Martin declare too old and saggy anyway. In fact they've decided there should be a law made excluding anyone over 30 taking their tops off.....#old dinosaurs

After feeding a few families of Mozzies in Aigues Mortes the night before, (it ain't called Dead Waters for nothing!) we all woke up and felt it was time to move on to the healthier Cote D'Azur before we all went down with malaria!

In time honoured fashion we did a couple of circuits of the walls before Dolly finally woke up and set us on the correct route. Dolly's little foibles were now wearing thin and so Martin passed us and led the way down the sunshine route to where the beautiful people hang out in St Tropez.

We crossed the Camargue Nature Reserve so having spied the famous white horses and black bulls, we all searched for the elusive pink flamingos, but they were conspicuous by their absence, with none to be seen outside the gift shops!

Now fellow Funsters, I have mentioned Martin's lean machine before in this thread - his sat nav that gets you to where you want to be at the cheapest possible rate. It has until now been a wondrous thing to behold, but whether it was trying to teach Dolly a lesson I don't know, but it got us off the toll road one mountain pass too early! An hour of bum clenching driving later, being overtaken by French nutters on heart stopping hairpin bends, and Martin meeting a 'vehicule exceptionalle' with a trailer, on the tightest bend was horrendous. We knew it was bad when the lady in the oncoming car covered her eyes, and as we passed we got a whiff of actual fear! Cliff says that's when we realised 'fear was brown'!
image.jpg

Cliff's input throughout the whole holiday has been heavily moderated by Dawn and I - he is still smarting from the fact we didn't entitle this thread 'breasts, fanny and willy (breasts for the chicken on the barby, fanny for the gorgeous food we have cooked, which is worthy of Ms Craddock, and Willy from our surreal trip through the 'world of nougat' A la Willy wonka ! He is measuring the success of our holiday by the amount of " likes" received and he feels a bit of saucy banta would up our numbers...

image.jpg

We passed Port Grimaud on our way to Camping Les Mures, only chosen for its similarity to our name 'Muse' and nothing to do with the fact that the beach is a stones throw away and the rate is a very favourable ACSI €18 per night!

Friday saw us up with the larks, cycling left into Sainte Maime. We needed to provision the van after our budget took a hit on carafes of rosé the night before. "What budget?" Shouts Martin. Throughout the course of this adventure/holiday we have operated a "batty purse" (entitled by cliffandger, no ideal why) this means we each put money in for our collective expenses. It's worked really well except when Martin and I were in charge of it and constantly forgot to take it with us, Ger finally took over and it's been great since.

Here's the boys taking in their new hobby of shopping....

Lovely produce in the market...
image.jpg

After a lunch by the marina we cycled back past the campsite to Port Grimald
Somewhat changed since Cliff and Ger's first visit in 1974.

image.jpg

A restful walk round whilst licking ice cream and we were ready for a lay down...

Well some of us were.

We took advantage of Ger's inside knowledge of the St Tropez market being held on Saturday. We cycled along the off road cycle track but with the constant noise of the very busy Rivera road as our companion. Traffic moves very slowly there with lots of buzzy mopeds and much beeping of horns. It was a relief when the cycle track took us away from the mayhem but it was short lived, we cycled with the small beaches and coves on our left, road on our right into St Tropez. It was much smaller than I imagined but as promised full of beautiful people...well some more beautiful than others...

See below, Ger makes a new friend..

We delve into the market, for all of 5 seconds.. Martin decides he hates the crowds so he and Cliff retire to a nearby cafe. Ger and I venture in again, it's rows of lovely stalls, selling everything from truffles to beach towels. We spot some shorts for Cliff and beautiful blue linen shirts for Martin but of course we need the boys for measuring, frantic phone calls and the sketchiest instructions of where we are "in the market by the soaps on a roap" and the boys appear..completely disinterested by our perceived bargains. They disappear again after buying 2 Roquefort and Lardon toasted things (sic Clifton) and telling us under no circumstances to buy them anything so Ger and I get on with the hard task of shopping.

Black truffles, pic in next post.

We all meet up at the town quay and are lucky enough to watch the docking of this small boat..

image.jpg

Room for a little un?..

A large party of middle eastern blokes with what could of been, high heeled, high end ladies took photos of us taking photos of them!
image.jpg

Lunch of moules frites, eaten as the locals do..

..
image.jpg

Whilst in France in July Martin made a rare purchase, a lotto ticket, he won so we went around choosing our new boats...
Ger's fav..
image.jpg

Mine, nothing to do with the "nice young man"
image.jpg

Martin then informed us that his winnings totalled €4.90 so this is all we could afford..
image.jpg

The beach at St Tropez..
image.jpg

Walking back past the luxury yachts and beautiful people in the sunshine along side the harbour restaurants we heard a commotion, not the Brazilian acrobats playing to the crowd but a Russian couple who were shouting and caring on, she in a short coral playsuit, 6 foot tall in sky high heels, complaining that someone had sworn in front of her child...having then secured front row seats we watched in amazement as she completely lost the plot, spitting, throwing plates around and upending water jugs she stalked off as we watched the best entertainment of the holiday so far, cliff said "that ain't over, she'll be back" and sure enough she came running back still shouting with little Dimitri her husband cowering behind her. She flung some money at the restaurant owner whilst telling everyone "don't eat ere, de food is sheet".
We giggled about it all the way home to the vans.

we watched a Russian couple jump and skip over the rocks, stealing our ideal, they go one further Striking a pose ala strictly, she flung her arm up and arched her back whilst he twirled her around. Not to be outdone Martin and I tried to imitate it, but I just look "special needs"!
