My habitation door lock mechanism is not working. The rods etc are fine and I can lock the door and unlock it as long as I don't pull the handle. It looks like the hammer bit of the lock has a spring or something missing as it doesn't return into place if the handle is pulled.

You have to buy the whole mechanism at a cost of £550! I need someone who can fix the mechanism.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

If you can remove the mechanism, why not pop down to a local locksmiths and see if you can purchase a suitably sized spring. That's what I'd do!

Depending on what van you have but many of them have door assemblies made by Hartal

Not sure if it's on the above page but somewhere there are parts pages.

We had a similar problem, fortunately we were under warranty.
Out local mechanic could have fixed it if he could have got the right spring, it turned into a bit of a tale

Thanks Mike

I'll give it a try, even a call out has to be much cheaper. My vans a Knaus Sun ti and I've found the lock in a 2010 ZADI catalogue. My issue being not quite sure which bit is broken - it's not an obvious big bit! I can't seem to find anywhere that I could purchase the lock from if its that.

Thanks all

Hi Terry
Here are some pics of the lock. Its the hammer arm that does not return back to position when you pull the handle. I wonder if there is something missing from the black bit adjacent on the rod to the hammer?

Any thoughts welcome!!

I would have thought there should be a circle spring to return the hammer. I don't have our van right now, so I can't check for you. Something like this:

@Branston1080 I have studied your photos a bit more closely. I could very well be wrong, but look at this:
doorlock2.JPG

The points marked 'A' look very much like spring retainer points. 'B' looks like the remnants of a spring behind the hammer!

@DanielFord thank you. Being a typical women what does that actually mean? If it is that is it a replacement spring?

I would certainly think so. I think you have 3 options.
1) Remove the whole assembly and dismantle the mechanism, measure the spring remnants and arm length and order a new one. Reassemble when the new one arrives. Probably cost about £2.
2) Take the removed assembly to a locksmiths and ask them to source a replacement spring. This will cost a little more.
3) Call out a locksmith (use check a trade to find a good one) have them repair it in situ. This will cost you parts plus call out.

All the above will be considerably less than £550

You definitely have a spring missing, I replaced a damaged handle 2 years ago and have the old set in the garage.
From my photos you can see the locating part of the spring.
If you want I can send you the spring pm me your address and I will post it on Tuesday
Cheers

If the lock has been removed for the photos, option 2 will be far cheaper. If you pre book and drive the van to them they should refit for you.
I had a stuck habitation lock, wife removed key halfway through cycle, they unpicked lock, said it was good practice and experience, and only wanted price of a pint. Locksmith near chantry bridge wakefield.

@tremybach that's a really kind offer thank you. I may take you up on that offer if the locksmith can't sort it. Thank you

Why am I not surprised by that! I Remember many moons ago my brother had an MGTF, it failed it's MOT due to fogged headlamp lenses. My brother not being too techy with cars was about to pay £100's to have 2 new headlamps installed. I stepped in, dismantled the headlamps, cleaned the lenses with fairy liquid and put the headlamps back in. Total cost to my brother, a bottle of fairy, and a case of beer! We were both quids in :D
Strangely my brother never used that MOT station again!

Hi Sheddy, been searching the forums for some answers and your pictures are perfect and confirm my thoughts. I have the spring, but its in 2 bits. The hook around the anvil was still intact but now I can see how the straight end tensions up the spring. Not bad I m only 6 years late to the party lol. Don t suppose you still that old spring?? Cheers Walt.

Hi Daniel came to this thread with the same door issues as the OP. Another neat little trick with fogged up headlights etc. take the bulb out of the back of the lamp, get a hair drier and blow warm air into lamp. Works a treat, again, sorry I m 6 years late. lol.
