20 years (unless you count my dads VW which makes it 52 years with a few gaps!!)
after a lovely weekend (apart from sitting in a ten mile tailback at the Dartford crossing) got home parked up, moved my car off the drive to put M/H on ,started up and within seconds could smell diesel, parked up and could see diesel dripping from engine bay. switched off and checked under bonnet and it appeared to be coming from fuel filter. let the old girl cool down and wiped everything clean, started up an hour later and all appears normal, no leaks! could it have just been sitting in the traffic for a couple of hours? any ideas? your thought appreciated.

Fiat ducato ?

Cracked filter housing, a common fault and not too expensive for a complete new housing.

Cheer PJ I have been doing a bit of searching and found all the threads. do I assume it will start chucking it out once it gets warm as it seems ok at present but I only ran it for 10 minutes?

If its anything like the filter in my car, ( as I found out after I changed it a few weeks ago) it gets very hot after a good run. Don't know where the filter is in the van to check.

Yep agree sounds like fuel filter housing cracked, common on early x250's.

A common issue (happened to me twice) is the fuel filter seal which can leak when hot - this is why it doesn't leak after you stopped for a while. The torque required to screw the top of the housing is quite high and it is easy to crack the housing as well. A lot of threads about leaking X250 fuel filters on here and a lot of advice. Later ones had modified filter design.

My money is on the leaking seal. Cheers

So it is, thanks..... mine has a black top :(.
My leaking ones were all black as well. The RAC man in both cases removed the whole filter housing, cleaned it, pointed out the lousy seal design and put it back together, fixing the leak in each case until the Fiat "professional" garage serviced the vehicle - seal started leaking a couple of weeks later in both cases

Chuck yours

Fit a new one and carry a spare new one

My correctly serviced one failed AGAIN after only 500 miles

Yes....... Torqued up with correct tooling!!

Stupid item!!??
:)

Oooooo forgot to say recovery man did £2000 worth of damage on the first recovery

Second failure I changed the filter myself in 10 mins, no tools

sorry for late reply, been offline for a while.
Started up last weekend and ran it for a few miles till nice and warm then let it idle for a while. turned off and gave it 10 min then started up again and ran it round the block. no sign of any leak. nervous now about doing any distance so have ordered new one anyway. (thanks for the link Techno) if anyone has the link for replacement seal ( I am being lazy!) I will get a spare and carry as well.
Thanks to all.

the seal comes with the new filter element. plenty on ebay or pick up locally at anywhere like halfords or motorfactors. but you will also need the specially developed tool to open and close the housing

I think it is possible to fit a later model filter with metal body. This prevents future cracking due to over tightening.

You cannot over tighten it if you use the correct tools and so far AFAIK it is not possible to do what you suggest.
It is more likely that leaks are a result of under tightening as even well know mechanics don't even know it says 30nm on the securing ring :ROFLMAO:

Hi yah Andy
While I subscribe to your superior knowledge :).........

I have a set of tooling and a torque wrench and I converted the torque to the correct setting, I took a great deal of care,( I did however lubricate the seal with a silicone grease) the old filter still leaked again after 500 miles.
In my humble opinion ( I have an engineering degree) the design of the filter is flawed, but you know that already:whistle:

The carnage that a fuel leak can cause , I think , warrants a new filter module, I also carry a spare NEW unit to replace the other at the road side

As I have already said, the fuel filter leaked on the roadside, recovery man did £2000 worth of damage recovering me,

Second leak I just changed the module in 10 mins and carried on with my journey( the module does not need any tools to change !!)

Carry a spare guy's

Neil

Edit.
Just looked back and realised I am repeating myself, but hey, it's still needs mentioning so hope it helps someone.

These filters don't crack, the seal distorts and leaks
