Yes, a 5 min walk to the walled Le Cite and a 15min walk to the Carcassonne centre. All down hill and funnily enough all uphill on the way back.
Can't remember how much to stay at the aire, barrier entry and exit IIRC. Gravel aire but level.

We returned to Le Cite after dark where it takes on a whole new character - we loved it, and the cassoulet ummmm

We stayed in June from 6.15 in the evening till 11am in the morning and it cost the exhorbitant sum of €7.

Brilliant location, lots of restaurants, recommend breakfast at the cafe on the RHS just through the gates, bit of a shop too.

Do you mean the one in the gravel parking area near the old walled city?

When we stayed there one sunny August it was hotter than Hades - our outdoor temperature sensor logged 50 degrees C and it was in shade. The fridge couldn't get below 16 degrees inside.

Convenient for visiting the old city though. Make sure your bog is empty on arrival - we couldn't find an obvious chemical disposal point at the time (a couple of years ago).

Sadly, Carcassonne appears to be heading down the same commercial route as Mont St Michel, but it's till worth a trip before it finally disappears under a flood of plastic knights and wooden swords.

Yes very very near old city. Suppose it wasn't so hot in June, didn't notice any shade! Didn't use any facilities though there was just one person on hook up, filling and emptying I think. When coaches leave parking area gets bigger for the motorhomes.

Ideal for visiting the walled city, short walk. Excellent cafes and restaurants. Agree getting a bit over commercial but still well worth a visit.
Our sat nag gave us hell getting there though, came up through the old town and narrow streets. Then when we got to the top found you can get to it easy straight off the main road.

If you can delay your visit until after the schools have gone back I guarantee you will have a better time in the old city.

It is murder in there during the summer holidays.

We visited a few years ago in August. We queued for ages just to get in and then had to join another queue to get out.

To top it all, once we had eventually found a table at a restaurant we were told they had stopped serving lunch.

Grumpy, hot and peed off I was.:D

We went a few years ago in July and it was awful. Left with a poor impression of the place ( plastic knights and wooden swords......) we went again last February and it was sunny, quite warm and brilliant. Minimal tourists, great views of the surrounding landscape and you can appreciate the architecture. We stayed at the aire and found a tap and somewhere to empty waste water but not toilet.

Is there 2 Aires there ?
As the one we saw (as we never stopped) was outside the town on a car park With a barrier but had a dump. Sure it was card operated !

Stayed there 2 years ago. Very open car park area near the town.
Town itself is soooo touristy, shame because all these old towns are going the same way.
As for the aire, its the only one we ever left because of pending danger. A car load of undesirables driving around looking for possibilities put me right off, and we left along with another Brit who thought the same thing.
I could be wrong of course but didnt take any chances.

Be careful my brother in law, his wife and our friends had their motorhomes broken into. Lots of belongings stolen and the van was trashed inside not to mention the lock on the entrance door forced. Speaking to local people whilst waiting for the police to arrive found out it happens on a regular basis. Really do recommend a camp site, even though we always use airs, in this case it's very advisable.

Not long enough!
Yep stayed for a few hours in June, this is the one we parked in, not sure on facilities but pretty sure you can dump waste water.
Before you leave you need to pay and get your ticket stamped by the machine in the car park to the left in the google image, in other words you cannot pay at the gate ok.
We enjoyed our visit, it wasn't to busy and we had no problems other than we didn't give it enough time(y)

Cassoulet is one of our favourite things to eat in France, we even absolutely love the big tins in the supermarket, go great with a french bread :D

We went to Carcassonne in June and it was so hot we decided to splash out and stayed at La Cite campsite as they had a pool, facilities also good but expensive. As others say it is touristy but amazing. Well worth the visit.

Hi we were there in March this year with friends our 2 van got broken into, they got in by putting
a screwdriver in the door lock and hitting it with a hammer.
We parked as you go in on the left we were the last of 10 vans parked up, there is a road running up the side
of it.
Off the road there was a big grass area with bins on , at the back there is a set of steps going down to a housing
estate.
Great escape route for the robbing BASTARDS, if you do go park on the right hand site were the buses park.
Carcassonne is a great place and well worth a visit. Cheers.
