To add to what @Gromett posted. I'm not a BT Fon customer but my understanding is that there is some sort of firewall between the main access and Fon access routes through the BT box. That way it is not possible for the Fon user to access the local network. Where you allow somebody to sign on to the main router then access to the local network could be compromised.

Yup that's how I undestood it too.

The problem with this is that it will share your Fon access password as well, which will then be shared to their friends and so on. It is only a matter of time before someone does something illegal on a shared password and the owner of said password is in the frame. This is just one of my worries.

The other is a lot of small businesses have a wifi access point onto the local network and no DMZ. It only takes one staff member to share their work wifi password and the bad boys are then on the company network with access to stuff they shouldn't.

There are big security issues with this and lots of problems.

What a silly idea, and all to pander to people who can't be bothered to learn to use computers properly. Dumbing down computer systems to the level of people who can understand no more than a TV on/off switch was never a good move.
That's why Apple have been so successful with their rubbish.

Having seen the diabolically low level of knowledge of some so called security experts in large companies I wouldn't be surprised if some of them suffered as well :D

I think there could be a security issue with this but it needs to be put in perspective. To access your WiFi someone needs to be in range of your WiFi signal. OK, this could be a reasonable distance if they have the right equipment but why would they bother?

Criminals can make more money and with less risk scamming vulnerable folk by phone and letter as they can do this and cover the whole of the UK without leaving their office, wherever this might be - Africa, Eastern Europe etc. They wouldn't want to drive a van to sit outside your house!

Of course a business might want to take precautions but as Sony found out the determined attacker will find a way in without having to park on your drive.

So, it is a risk but there are worse and if MS find it is being exploited I guess they will close it.

Microsoft, though, have always expected users of new versions of Windows to sort out their ruddy problems for them. They only had us (in Business I mean, when the proprietors of our Broking etc software went over to Windows 2, or was it 3? LOL) ONCE though - never again. You spent more time reporting this week's (new!) glitches, than you did doing your actual work. Thereby a small company with a total of about 9 employees landed up having to have a dedicated IT manager - whilst using as I said, commercially available trade specific software.

Ridiculous.

A lot of motorhomers have the right equipment , so they dont have to sit in a Campsite reception or for getting a signal whilst wild Camping :coolest:

Frightening! I don't like that at all.
They can only share your internet access, they can't see your files. What's frightening about that? If it turns out someone works out how to hack this facility no doubt MS will do something about it. They've had plenty of practice plugging leaks! I can see what MS are trying to do, making everything seamless, internet of all things etc. Good luck to them.

My point was to keep it all in proportion.

There is nothing wrong with making things seamless but the default should be that allowing sharing is a positive act rather than automatic.

Agreed, and it should be a per "access point" share. ie if you sign on to a new access point it asks you in your face if you want to share it with your friends.

Just realised one that may catch a few of us out here. What happens if a bunch of us who are all friends go on an informal rally at a Caravan club campsite. One of us pays for the caravan club wifi access point. Shortly thereafter that password is shared amongst a few of those friends automatically and you all get banned from the Wifi service country wide......

After a fortnight of non use, I'm on my HP Compaq laptop with Win 7 Home Premium, and the Win 10 upgrade icon has appeared. (y)
I shan't be upgrading anytime soon, judging by what I have read above. ;)

Cheers for now,

Jock. :)

All being well I'll be updating a Win 7 laptop (not either of our current Win 8.1 machines which work very well) to Win 10 in late August. I'll let you know how I get on :)

I, and others no doubt, will be pleased to read of your results and opinions on the upgrade Graham. (y)

@Gromett, Karl, will you be updating any Win7 or Win8 machines in the next few weeks at all?

Cheers for now,

Jock. :)

It appeared on mine a couple of days ago after an update. I have been looking how to get rid of it, not by updating to 10.

Microsoft have planted two 'updates' KB3035583 and KB2952664. Uninstall these and the MS nags will dissappear until they plant yet another 'update'

Do your machines 'qualify' for the Windows 10 release? The first, KB2952664, was the original implant. Immediately that was installed the nags appeared on my desktop pc so I immediately uninstalled and no more nags. Apparently the qualification criteria for Windows 10 update 'offer' is not straightforward. It is not just dependant upon whether your present OS is legal. For example, corporate or bulk licence users do not recieve the 'offer' automatically but will still be able to get Windows 10 by manually upgrading after the release date. Very confusing for everyone :(

Desktop with full retail version of Windows 7 Pro installed.
Laptop with full retail version of Windows 7 Home installed.
Netbook with OEM version of Windows 7 Home installed.

All receive Windows Update notifications, etc.

Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, think I'll go and eat some worms!

To take things to the worst case scenario:
Someone uses "your" internet connection to down/upload kiddie porn via FTP / Newgroups / Torrents.
Police get hold of the IP address
Police go to ISP
ISP give the Police the account details of the person the IP address was assigned to at the time/date of the offence. Except it'll be that of the innocent person who left a Microsoft product open and sharing.
First thing Mr Innocent account holder learns of his mistake is when his front door parts from its frame early one morning - closely followed by a dozen of the local constabulary removing all IT equipment from his home.

As for not being able to access "your" files - there'll already be a raft of grubby little oiks working on that "l33t hack" :cautious:

Same security risks as with BT Fon. However, at least with Fon other peoples usage does not come out of the allowance you pay for. With the Windows 10 proposal you will be paying for others to use your allowance. We are not all on unlimited, anytime, anywhere tariffs. Or, are Microsoft proposing that they pay your monthly internet bill

In my area the broadband internet is poor so I would not be happy for others to be using my internet. It is slow enough already. I have Win 8.1 on the laptop but can't see anywhere that says I have allowed sharing or anywhere to close that option. Since recent MS update I also have the window 10 icon.
