Hi I'm after a towbar for our 2008 transit, it's not an alko chassis or type approval required I think! So I'm after someone to make one but one on at a reasonable price in the North East.

Any recommendations?!

I'm not an expert but there are a number of off the shelf tow bar kits available. Getting one made up may cost more and cause issues with insurance companies.

They can only " make it " if they have an EU homologation for tow bars. In the UK it is required to have the plate with manufacturers details on.

type approval needed at that year.

European type approval 94/20/EC
In the U.K, with effect from 1st August 1998 all Passenger Carrying Vehicles up to 3500kgs Gross Vehicle Weight (M1 Vehicles) can only be fitted with European Type Approved towbars if the vehicle has received European Whole Vehicle Type Approval.

I made my own and it cost around £60/£70 inc professional welding.

Sorry, i wouldnt make one for anyone but me....too much responsibilty involved.

I think people are all getting confused and the original information not fully given..
I am understanding this to be a coachbuilt motorhome on a Transit base vehicle, 2009.
No type approval needed, that is after April 2012. Simply a case of one being made up by one of the several motorhome towbar companies, ie Towtal etc... Cost usually around the £500 mark is what they all seem to charge. Find a local fabricator and it may be done a lot cheaper if they can be bothered / encouraged to do it..

See my post above yours Tonka.....motorhomes are type M1

EDIT....Actually, you are correct, that only applied to cars not goods vehicles

I recall lots of debate about all this motorhome type approval.
When buying my 2012 van I was just on the edge as it was registered in January and the new type approval for motorhomes came into effect in April.. Sure that somewhere on one of the towbar sellers website it has the right information...

Here ya go...

I made the trip down to Armitages today!

They throughly checked my van prior to taking it for its towbar fitting - and asked what I was towing. We discussed towball positions to suit my needs.

I was given a clean and tidy curteousy car for the day! On collection the bar was positioned how I wanted and looks really nice! I haven't towed anything yet but was happy with customer service today!! Bar is also played with towing weights, nose weight etc!
