The X250 plastic engine cover is on the 3 litre at least inadequate.
If the scuttle hasn't been sealed then any water running onto the cover runs straight off the front directly onto the throttle body electrical connector.
This on mine results in the engine management light coming on frequently with a throttle actuator fault code.
So I've knocked this up as a trial cure.

The last time I saw a throttle on a diesel engine it was an air-governed 1950s Ford tractor!
Wouldn't mass airflow meter be a more accurate description?

reminds me of the 'fix' that BMC employed on the early Mini's .. to keep the dizzy dry..

keep up the good work Andy .. am keeping a close eye on all the workarounds as I may have a new Fiat soon .

Fiat .. "Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino"

no .. it means Fix It Andy Tomorrow..

Isn't it remarkable that they have practically admitted there is a water ingress problem by producing a revised body presumably with the electrical connection in a less vulnerable place
Why not just modify the naff engine cover they drummed up (n)

I agree they call it a throttle body, but a throttle it ain't!
A throttle meters airflow creating a depression as in the application on a spark ignition engine.
A diesel engine needs a 100% fill of air to achieve combustion by compression. There is no depression or 'throttling'!
In the diesel application, the airflow control butterfly (throttle in Engtalian) prevents overly high cylinder pressures and therefore lower idle stroke resistance. This increases economy and power.

God I hate it when manufacturers use bad technical language!

The motor driven throttle body performs two functions:
-shut off management
-it controls exhaust gas temperature by restricting the cross sectional area of the intake duct.

Sounds ok to me. In this instance I'll stay on the same song sheet as the manufacturer.

The normally open throttle valve assembly fitted on the intake manifold controls the flow rate of intercooler air (throttles) to mix with the exhaust gases recirculated by the EGR valve

This is probably refering to limp mode?

"If the throttle valve jams, the control unit will reduce engine performance to prevent engine damage."

I have not experienced this myself, so far performance has remained despite the throttle actuator fault code being logged. It usually clears en route after a good drive.

Only my opinion, but being in an industry which involves imported machinery, I see a shockingly low standard of technical english in all technical publications.
The death of our manufacturing industries is causing a pollution of our technical language.
We seem to be naming components based on what they look like rather than by their function.
Having a technical language lead by non technically qualified parts people is wrong and causes confusion.

In this case it still ain't a throttle, its an induction airflow regulation valve!
You could call it anything you like, but if it doesn't throttle, it aint a throttle!!!!

I just found this on the FIAT forum dated April AMAZING

Following my P0638 code I plucked up the courage to remove the throttle actuator.
I found that water had got into the actuator. It had been running off the engine cover onto the throttle actuator assembly.
I dismantled the actuator, cleaned it up and resealed it.

Replacing the assembly on the engine was rather more difficult than removing it due to the inaccessibility of the front offside securing bolt. Although I did manage to do the job without removing the grill, radiator etc.

Mine is a Peugeot 3L 160HDi, having the same Iveco engine as the 3L Ducato.

The actuator is shown split from the throttle body, prior to cleaning, in the attached photo.

I also managed to separate the actuator stator section from the rotor section and give those a good clean.

Needless to say, I then fitted a plastic deflector, tucked under the engine cover, to divert any water away from the throttle actuator!

Hopefully the problem is now sorted, but time will tell.

Hi,very interesting i had mine replaced in May before going to europe, part supplied by fiat a recon part costing £285, +fitting, 8weeks later in Germany said part fails again on a friday afternoon managed to limp 1hour to Trier to get told that the part fitted was an old type.the good news was they had a modified part in stock and could fit that afternoon and would be ready around 5pm.Try getting that service at home.the bad news was 600euro.The best i could get from fiat was a refund on the faulty part on our retun home would not refund on fitting.

Had the throttle body replaced not too long ago. Still worth doing this little mod though.. thanks

Last one I saw was on a 3 cyl Perkins in a Fergie tractor. It used the throttle depression to control the injector pump.

My Transit has a swimming pool cylinder head with immersed injectors, or it did until i fitted an engine cover to move the water over the other side and away, Same problem it was the scuttle panel and the cover shows exactly where it comes in along the bonnet rubber which is not good enough for heavy rain.
