We are planning on getting our underneath waxoyled to prevent rust but the man doing it has asked do we want black or clear.

He ask black hides the rust nicely for the future.

So clear or black?????????

absolutely love waxoyl or the morris oils equivalent. really helps protect your investment. from preference I prefer clear so you can easily see if there is damage or rust coming through the metal. black hides too much in my opinion

if there is already surface rust, clean it up and use a rust converter first before applying waxoyl.

Can I ask how much it costs? ive always thought of getting ours done seeing as we have no reason to sell

A great move,we under seal all our vehicles up here and we use the black stuff,as others have said you can see where you have missed, plus we always do the inside of doors etc:thumb:

Hi Paul, I'm not 100% sure of the cost but won't be overly expensive the man is going to do it while he changes the brakes. It will just be labour costs plus the cost of product. He said it would take him a few hours as he likes to do it properly and get into all the holes etc! He repairs/restores land rovers normally. He recommended black but sometimes uses clear on fully restored vehicles to show off the quality- I suppose ours is more of a work horse than a museum piece!

Waxoyl Hmmm I suggested cuprinol on my babys wooden bottom bits and got my head chewed off.

Are you guys just talking about the metal bits ??

5l of waxoyl £40
pump up spray attachment £20
2.5l white spirit £5
plastic dust sheets £2

labour about 2 hours

its an easy but possibly messy DIY job, hence the plastic sheets, which anyone fit and small enough to get under the van can do. paying a specialist often ends with a bill upwards of £500, which is ridiculous if you see whats involved

wash underside of van with pressure washer and allow to dry
lay out sheeting under van
fit pump on first 2.5l can and pump up pressure
spray exposed metal work, ensuring you also spray into chassis openings. but avoid getting on the exhaust, engine parts or gearbox
if it wont spray due to being too thick, warm the can in a bucket of hot water or thin slightly with white spirit and try again
when completed, wash off any overspray and clean up using white spirt
dont sleep in the van for 48 hours as the waxoyl cures

I would raise the estimate for materials!

Ours took 20 litres all in! A combination of clear, black and underbody seal for the high wear parts ( wheelarches etc.).

Black for the underside, clear for cavities!

Waxoyling really helps as sound deadening too. I covered the entire underside, wood and all!

Looked everywhere in Devon to get this done on my MH, no luck, cant get under the van meself or I would do it.

TheBig1 has it spot on, we did ours the day we bought from new, using the ramps which lifted the motor home up quite a bit helped getting underneath, ours took 10ltrs (7.1 mtr Van) and we did every nook and crannie .
We decided to go with clear because the motorhome was new, was really easy got a good spray from the gun by putting the Waxoyl can, didn in a bucket of hot water easily done in a couple of hours.:thumb:

When we got our latest van I asked on here about waxoyl and several people said don't do it because it melts the black stuff on your wood floor , so now are we saying it's ok, done all my other pickups and vans with the pump up can no probs but left the van because it sounded as of it did as much damage as good.
Btw anyone near here if you want to do your own we have a pit in a shed with a door high enough to get a mh in, which you could use for a small consideration, also got the waxoyl kit.

We had ours done last year by this brilliant company the company is run by a group of guys who live and breathe 'Vintage', Started doing this in a 'Dad's' Farm Barn for their own group, then due to demand opened their own workshop on an 'Work Park' as a group effort. Nice part about this, quality work and no VAT.
When I took the van into our MOT station, they were amazed at how good and clean the under-seal job was and they would recommend them every day of the week.

On our Land Rover camper see photos on web site, more photos on Home - Teddys when we had finished, refurbishing first a coat of cravitex then Schultz finnely waxoil.
So will be doing the same on Mr frosty, just got to finnish our Discovery 1.

As mentioned keep it hot. I use a high pressure garden sprayer immersed in very hot water.
Not the most enjoyable DIY job but well worth the effort, I hope.
