This may seem a daft question for you MH veterans, but can you take a motorhome to The Channel Islands?

Thanks for the replies - just what we wanted to know.
As to why we would want to go - well lets just say its because of fond memories of our distant youth and leave it at that - you don't need to know the details. except that hotels are expensive!

Just be a little bit careful about the idea of taking your motorhome to the Channel Isles. They have only recently allowed motorhomes ashore - see this.....

Nothing but good can come from caravans. A PROPOSED caravan park has the support of the tourism industry. Chris Sharp, of La Fregate Hotel and chairman of the Guernsey Hospitality and Tourism Group, believed nothing but good could come of it.

‘Some people see this as being detrimental to the island and promote scare stories of 20-mile tailbacks, like on the M5,’ he said. ‘But how many do they see coming here?

‘I think they should be encouraged and they could be easily managed. They arrive at a set time on the ferry and can have a designated route to and from the site, which they will travel only twice during their stay. The argument that they will block our roads could also be levelled at our buses and quarry lorries, which doesn’t seem to be the case.’

He said caravanners would contribute to the economy of the island and although they might not spend as much as if they were staying in a hotel or self-catering establishment, the same could be said for day trippers, cruise visitors or campers.

That view was supported by Chris Elliott, Commerce and Employment’s director of marketing and tourism.

‘The department has looked at the issue of allowing caravans to visit Guernsey before,’ he said.

‘Its view is that these would be extra holidaymakers and that if some concerns could be addressed, the idea should be supported.

‘It would be important to make sure, perhaps by the issuing of dated permits, that these were only touring caravans coming here for one or two weeks rather than semi-permanent mobile homes and that they were to be used by genuine holidaymakers rather than as accommodation for workers. They would have to be going to a designated and pre-booked campsite.
‘We believe the campsite owners would need to be responsible for providing the owners with maps showing the shortest and safest route from the ferry to the campsite and back again - we obviously wouldn’t want vans getting lost on single-track ruettes tranquilles.

‘Jersey lifted restrictions on caravans a few years ago and put similar safeguards in place and staff in tourism there report that there have been very few problems.’

I think you will find that there is a maximum length of something like 7 metres allowed ashore - and you are only allowed the one journey to and from the pre-booked caravan site - you are not allowed to use the motorhome to tour with - so you are likely to have to use public transport around the islands.

You really do need to check with the Channel Isles tourist board for the proper information.

We planned to go over to Jersey for 4 days last year on the motorbike and stay in B&B but the price was so horrendously expensive we did'nt bother. Could have had a week in Majorca in a really nice hotel for less money.

We still want to go though and now have some friends who have just inherited some property and have gone there to live, never know might get an invite

I thought I remembered right that caravans and MH didn't USED to be allowed to the channel islands - obviously because of the tiny narrow lanes. It would certainly be worth a weeks trip in the MH (and save on the huge hotel bills there) and from what I remember, walking is the best way to get from A to B once there, its so tiny and pretty.

Hi from Grumpy git :Angry:and Brenda. Yes you can take the 'van to the islands. We went to Jersey with our Rapido a few years ago. We were going to book through Camping and Caravan Club, Clubcare. We were quoted a price of about £800. But Brenda being Brenda wasn't happy with that price. So contacted the site Beuvalande in St. Martins and they did everything for us, booked ferry etc, met us at the ferry terminal, escorted us to the site. Beautiful site it is too. We organised a hire car for the fortnight as the van was a bit too big for the islands roads. All we had to do was pay and turn up. The total cost for all this was £500. Of course the car hire was extra, we did the fortnight in a Ford Ka for just over £10 in petrol. I am sure the owners of the site are still doing this, I would contact them for up to date prices as we went 4 years ago. It was well worth the trip. If you want to visit the other islands there are trips you can take, but not with the van.
