Hi Funsters,

Hoping you can help? We are booked with our Motorhome on the new ferry route from Poole to Gijon (Spain) in June. Has anyone used this crossing yet? We have previously used the St Nazaire (France) to Gijon but this time are cutting out the long drive by sailing directly to Spain :thumb:

Does anyone know what the loading/unloading is like? We took our car last time and were on an outside top deck with a very steep ramp leading up to it...unsuitable to drive a Motorhome up! ::bigsmile:riving2:

Also, can anyone recommend a small, quiet campsite up to an hours drive from Gijon along the A8?

All suggestions gratefully received!!!

Jack and Andrea

We have used the Norman Asturias on the St. Nazaire route with the 5'er, some trucks drive in some reverse in. Not sure if the trucks that drive in turn round inside as we never got to see that end of the boat because we were last on and had to reverse off at St. Nazaire using half the ramp because they were having problems. Shouldn't be a problem in a motorhome, plenty of staff to watch if things are tight.

We have also used the route with the pickup solo with bikes on the roof, paid extra for the height and still had to go up the ramp but I doubt if they will try and put motorhomes up there.

I know of a site in Luarca that I think is open all year but you don't say which direction you are heading.

Thanks for your reply. We are heading West then in and out of Portugal to end up in Extremadura, which is our favourite part of Spain.

The 17 hour crossing from St Nazaire to Gijon was really boring...wonder what the 24 hour one will be like?!!

We have stopped at Monfrague a couple of times with the 5'er but did not venture too far from the immediate locality which is quite impressive. We are only learners when it comes to birdwatching so most of the raptors are unidentifiable to us. A German with a good telescope told us that a speck in the distance was an Imperial Eagle and let us look but it was too far away but got a tick in the book:roflmto:

We have also stopped a few times at a hotel in Plasencia when travelling solo en route to the ferry and is well worth a visit.

Next time we are up that way a visit to the Veras will be on the cards, weather and time permitting.

We rent an old casita on a hillside for a week every year. Views of the mountains. Birds everywhere. And just chill with a beer or two ::bigsmile:
