I'm a newbie but did own one in 2003. Been into camping for many years.
Ok guys/gals,

Can you experts tell me roughly what it costs to insure a motorhome? Asume that I will get a second-hand coachbuilt that's around 5 years old. My mondeo (6 years old) is £250 fully comp and includes full breakdown cover.

Also, are there any specialist places out there that will cover me for breakdowns etc (similar to being in AA or RAC) or do I just go to those regular ones that usually cover cars? Do insurance companies offer it on motorhomes as well?

Are there any other things like this I should be looking out for before getting my motorhome?

Cheers!

A lot of it depends on age and location. I live in Kent, I got fully comp on our new van for around £200. I had to get a tracker fitted because of the value and this was with mirrored NCB ( 9+ years NCB on my car) and being a member of Institute of Advanced motorists. I got mine through the Camping and Caravanning club.
The van came with a years free European recovery through Peugeot.
Lots of people on here have different insurers and breakdown companies. Its easier if you have a van below 3.5 tons, over that and some breakdown companies won't want to know.

Ah cheers guys. Interesting! I'm glad to see you're all saying it's around a few hundred quid (even on new ones) and weren't talking about thousands!

I think that anything under £500 a year is acceptable on a new motorhome and I reckon I should be able to get that then, given that I have over 10 years NCB on my car atm. I dunno if it helps (or hinders!) that also hold a PCV and HGV class 1 licence and have no recorded accidents...yet!

Hi, I insure our van for about the same as my wife's new Fiesta. £290 including 365 day European breakdown cover. Generally Motorhomes are considered low risk as vehicles due to relatively low annual mileages but also due to the typical motorhome driver profile - we aren't likely to burn rubber at the traffic lights. At least not in the van, anyway.

Always better to shop around and ensure that you compare like for like plus it is a policy that meets your requirements - sorry for stating the obvious, but so many people don't. Some of the insurances are also the same just with different brokers. Aviva underwrite a lot of them. Unless it is something exotic and you are full timing then it is unlikely to be hugely expensive

Hi Kryten,
We pay £146 for insurance thru SAGA for 2006 A class Pilote Reference value £30000 fully comp and then breakdown cover with RAC thru camping and caravan club arrival , as it covers me for me being in any vehicle that I travel (car or camper or anybody elses that I'm in) but also covers me for large camper (to be lift and tow etc) not all breakdown comp's do, cost £95.

Hi, I am interested in what Allanm calls "mirrored NCD". Does that mean you use the car's NCD on both vehicles? The reason I asked is that what I thought was good quote from Saga turned out not to be when they said I could only have the NCD on one vehicle. I assumed that applied to all insurers at the time and paid up, but are there some who will allow you to use the car NCD while it is still on the car?

Thanks for the info again peeps! :thumb:

Erm yeah Peter, I dunno about that mirrored NCD. I think you're right but Allan, can you fill us in on that please?

Janine: £95!! :Eeek: :thumb: Hey, ya can't grumble at that can you!?

Am I right in thinking you need to be 50 or over to get insured with Saga? If I'm right, then I need to wait a couple of years first. :winky:

Cheers!

Hmm
I am have just got a quote from comfort for our N&B Arto 2010 plate. With tracker fitted.
They want £525 including RAC UK and European breakdown:Sad:

Maybe because we had to claim for a new windscreen last year with Saga.

I phoned comfort today and was quoted £313 + 58 European recovery. That's for mum being the main driver and me driving with 6 points. Thought this was a pretty good quote actually.

We're insured through Comfort - our van is under 3,500kg, 3.5 years old, we live near Bristol, cover is fully comp for wife and self to drive and includes full UK and European breakdown. We paid about £315 last time. Renewal due in a couple of months. Insurance premiums are supposed to be on the way down at the moment, according to reports in the press - we'll have to see.

Ref: NCB / NCD - apparently Comfort Insurance don't use that system, but quote what I think are called 'Net Premiums' or something like that. We've been insured with them for 4 years.

Good luck with your new van, whatever you decide to buy.

yes, you can have ncb on both vehicles if your insurers allow it....not all do.

The discount on the second vehicle does not earn any ncb discount in its own right and the premium will never reduce with the same insurer.

If you change insurers at renewal and they dont offer mirrored you wil pay the full non-discounted premium....even after numerous years with the previous insurer.
