Julie and i were planning to take this year out to go off on our travels. The place where she works were willing to give her a year off and take her back when we had finished our travels. In mid November i woke up one morning , got out of bed and crashed into the wardrobe. I managed to get downstairs and tried to get myself ready for work but couldn't stand without stumbling and neither could i focus.I saw the doctor who diagnosed me with labrynthitus and put me on a course of tablets.Lucky enough i have a network of mates/ builders who got my project at the time finished for me. I was unable to start the next job which would have brought me to the end of work for a year. Its been 10 weeks now and I'm still dizzy and on my 5th course of tablets, can't start my job i was supposed to do before xmas and therefore has a knock on effect. Its totally buggered up all our plans we had made. Has anyone else had so much bad luck thrown at them so far this year?

SWMBO had the same thing about a year ago.
The bad news is it took months to clear up properly.
She was in a terrible state and we both panicked because we hadn't a clue what was wrong. She couldn't stand or even sit up without going limp and falling over. It was like watching a puppet with the strings cut.
Thankfully all is well now and she can get back to the serious job of waiting on me hand and foot :hardhat:

I hope you recover soon as I know how badly it affects you. :thumb:

Rough luck yes but better to have it now, and get it right than if you had been taken ill while away:thumb:

Hi,
It always seems bad at the time.
Keep positive and focus on what you want to do in the future.
I did and everything is looking good now despite potential disaster over the last few years.
Good luck Mate

Thanks for your comments all, its been a strange experiance up until the last couple of days really. It has made me quite anxious to the point where i didn't want to go out.We tried a weekend away but was just confined to the van . The strange thing is i have had no pain what so ever and i find it hard to describe whats been going on.Anyone who has suffered it would know what i mean , a truly nasty couple of months.:Eeek:

I looked it up. Looks nasty , especially if you spend your time climbing ladders and stuff. I read that some people get depressed with it so try to keep your chin up.

Get yourself down to Fairlight and if an Autotrail Scout pulls in ( via your pitch) I am sure it will cheer you up::bigsmile:

Daveo,
I had this several years ago and had no initial symptoms, other than a bit dizzy, but it quickly accelerated.
Had no pain or anything but the seriousness of it was driven home when I was driving home in the car one evening. I came to a roundabout where I needed the third exit on a cross roundabout....... It was so embarrassing as I went round I naturally leaned my head to the inside as I went round and suddenly found that I couldn't steer out of the turn, my brain was fooled (I was told by the doc). I parked against the roundabout not knowing what to do - I got out and immediately fell over, couldn't get up - one other driver shouted at me that I must be drunk driving,,,,,,, I felt like a child and it was one of the most frightening experiences I ever had. My Wife picked me up and Son got the car home - it took months to heal - but it will.
Walking down the semi spiral stairs at the hospital was nerve racking - I didn't know if I was going up or down and I felt totally sick.

Hope you get over this soon, I sympathise with you - to others it's just not apparent until you fall over or stumble, but people just think your drunk.

Regards,

Trikeman. :winky:

Thanks so much for this Trikeman, i had something similar happen.I started to drive up the dual carriageway and was having to concentrate like never before and when i looked at the speedo i was only doing 25mph . I felt that i needed to try and get to work for the sake of work mates dependent on me.Normally when ill i just soldier on but it wasn't the case with this,i couldn't . I won't deny that all sorts of things have been on my mind as to what it could have been.Im just hoping that i don't get any other bouts of it as none of the meds that I've been prescribed seemed to of eased it.It certainly does make you feel very vulnerable but i have felt so much better over the last 2 days.

Like Phill D we had a problem 2 years ago, had nothing planned at the time but it did take a year out of our lives. Vowed to take every opportunity to enjoy life since then. Helps if you're retired of course but sometimes we all need a jolt to get us to see life for what it is - one chance only, no trial session.

Hope things work out for you and you get over this asap. :thumb:

well that puts life in perspective doesn't it, really hope you continue to improve and so glad it wasn't anything more serious. Use the time to do some more research for your 'gap year' as there are so many amazing places that you may not have even heard of yet. I am a great believer that everything happens for a reason :winky:

I can certainly sympathise with you and know only to well that sometimes life can deal you a poor hand. 6 years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had radium treatment for it. I had 6 good years of travel with the motorhome and threw myself into enjoying life to the full, living each day as though it was my last. Unfortunately I was recently diagnosed with secondary tumours in the bladder. I have had treatment for this and am now looking forward to another 6 years of enjoying life to the full. Get well soon and am sure life will begin to be enjoyable again. Take each day as it comes and do not believe everything doctors tell you. Life is very precious and should be enjoyed to the full.

I am not sure this advise will help you but it certainly helped me when I was diagnosed with Vestibuleitis, which is similar to Labyrinthitis.

I was told that when I lost balance and felt like the floor was moving I should really focus on something that is not moving, a door handle or a cup, something quite small as oppose to a door or wall. I was told not to close my eyes and try to keep standing or sitting upright. As I understood it, it was a way to retrain your brain to recognise a balanced state, i.e what was level and what isn't.

Not sure I have explained this very well but it's worth a try. I cannot say with any certainty that it cured me but I did get noticeable better when I tried this, but what's to say I wasn't on the mend anyway. It made me me feel better just to be trying to help myself rather than just waiting for each dizzy spell to pass.

No expereince of your condition but yes we have had life "dump" on us. April 1997 we went to Cornwall with a steam loco I used tohelp run and over the weekend there put my back out. Went to the quack when home put on sick leave (was working for MOD at the time). Long story short, over three years I saw a variety of specialists and took painkillers by the box load and used a wheelchair 50% of the time becuase I literally couldn't walk for the pain. Finally, after being medically retired from a really good well paid job got referral to pain clinic. Not cured but a simple procedure helped me out and the consultant in charge taught me a lot about pain management. 2000 I got back into work and have not looked back since, now running my own business for nearly 9 years! Back still gives me grief from time to time but I now understand what's causing it and how to manage it so that I can live my life.

Keep your chin up, it sounds like your condition is treatable and will clear up in time.

As an aside a close friend who is only 27 had a bad foot middle of last year, went to quack, gout, NSAI prescribed followed by tests. Turns out he only has one kidney and that has reduced function. Now on medication to control it and has to watch his diet but his ultimate futuree contains a high lielihood of dialysis! No matter what happens to us there's almost always someone worse off.

I have just got over this. Woke up recently and the world was spinning. It goes, but is quite disconcerting.

However the news I got to day out of the blue has rocked me to the core. Cannot reveal the details but suffice to say it has completely changed what the future held.

One never knows what is round the corner, one minute life is fantastic and then it all changes in a second.

Boy I wish my crystal ball was more accurate.

diagnosed me with labrynthitus and put me on a course of tablets.

Long time ago ( I was 12 ) I had that, a week in hospital on tablets and I was fine. In fact the world stopped spinning on day 2 but they weren't short of beds in those days.

Time to scream "specialist" maybe.

Very sorry to read your story, I have had this twice a few years back, then once last year. However, it sounds as if mine was minor compared to yours, but would really like to know what brings it on:Sad:

We were about to set off to Ireland with the kids and I woke up one morning to find that the whole room was spinning round, I had to hold on to the edge of the bed. It was just like when you were young and you would lie on your back on a roundabout and it was going round so fast. Had to cancel the holiday at short notice as well. It's a horrible thing to have, so I hope you get yourself back to normal as soon as possible and that things improve before too long.

In my case they were very clear about it, an abscess in the ear.

I can see the room spinning to this day. I can see the pale yellowy wallpaper. 58 years on, that made a hell of an impression on me !

Hi Brian, I had no other symptoms at all beforehand, had spent the previous day in the garden on my knees a lot and doing a lot of bending.
As you said, awful, horrible experience:thumbdown:
