Our new Hymer is having cam belt fitted before we pick it up in a couple of weeks. It is a 2004 model which has a 2.8 JTD engine. Is there any merit in getting them to change the water pump at the same time? The engine has done 38,000 miles.

Hi,Coolbeanz If it were my choice I would go for a new pump as its a nap it will go at the most inconvenient time and place whilst you are on your travels and if it does the timing belt will have to come off to fit it :thumb:

worth doing while the motor is striped.
Could always fail in a year or two then you pay just as much labour charge again.

A bit like changing the oil filter but leaving the old oil in.

Perhaps on a high mileage engine or one where the belt replacement is quite a big job.
I believe the 2.8 is not a major job based on prices for belt replacement compared to a 2.2. I think your pump is best left undisturbed, it may well go on for a further 100k.
Personally I would ask for the opinion of the Garage mechanic.

change the pump after all it has been sat in water for the last 10 years and the seals may have perished.
it's sods law if you don't change it it will fail and if the bearing in this fails then it will kill the new timing belt along with the whole top end of the engine.

at work we always change the water pump with a full timing belt kit with tensioners and idler pulleys it really isn't worth doing 1 and not the other.

Forums are full of tails of woe of all manner of failures. I've not in four years come across a failed water pump on any forum. Mechanics know from experience what fails on what vehicle at what age and mileage as a rule. Ask

Edit
The seal is no more likely to fail than your crankshaft seals
think about that?

It might appear expensive for a 2.2ltr engine but it's not reasonable to compare a chain cam drive with the rubber belt on a 2.8.
