Are my tyres legal (1 Viewer)

On a recent trip in Germany I was told that my two front tyres were illegal. Apparently, the load indicated on the tyre was below what was required based on the weight of the vehicle. I had them fitted in UK by a nation wide tyre fitting company and they were happy for me to select budget tyres. Am I risking an insurance company rejecting a future claim or are the Germans just trying to sell me some new tyres?

And yes, if tyre failure was the cause of a crash expect insurance company to decline.

We need more information:

What tyres are they?

What is the Max load quoted on the tyre?

What is the Max Axle load on the Vin Plate?

That would give an idea of whether they are ok in terms of load.

Hi Bernard,what motorhome is it? what chassis is it on?what tyre size is it?is it single wheel on the rear or dual wheel on the rear?

Tyre regulation in Germany are more stringent than the uk, German tyre are ship here partially worn and sold legally even though they are below the minimum German legal requirement , you are in their country so have to conform with there traffic regulations I'm afraid ,

Surely it's simple maths. Look at your max axle weights and then the rating on the tyres. That should be legal where ever you are, but personally I would prefer the tyres to be able to handle a bit more weight than they have to. I used to have a large caravan on a single axle, and all the normal tyres were just about rated to the laden weight, but to go up to a bigger ply rating, which took it into the commercial van range, cost nearly double, but what price peace of mind, and you don't have to buy tyres very often.

i agree, speak to a specialist not somebody at a national chain that just wants to sell whats in stock. i have heard of so many cases where the big chains fit the wrong tyres then blame the customer. as a normal customer, its not practical for everyone to have specialist knowledge, that why we rely on so called expert advice

as for tyre weight limits affecting any insurance claim, absolutely right it will. decent tyres are the only thing connecting your van to the road so never compromise on quality. having a tyre blow out at speed is not an experience you will ever want to repeat. load and speed ratings are there for very good reasons
