stolen electric bike in the Algarve (1 Viewer)

Yesterday Terry had his electric bike stolen from outside a library here in the Algarve.
It was all securely locked to railings alongside mine.
The only difference is he had a key lock and I have a combination lock.
We immediately went to the police station where we spent 3 hours waiting in a queue to report it stolen.
Even though the officer in attendance could speak good English, they brought a translator to the station who turned up in ten minutes.
We live in hope that it will turn up but in our heart realise it's gone for good even though they said such un unusual bike will probably be found soon.
It was not insured as comfort wouldn't insure them and said that we should insure them on our home policy which we don't have as we full time and told them so at the time, they basically just said no we don't do that!
So we just have to bear the cost of it.
We realize that it could be pinched anywhere in the world, just wanted to share with someone.
All the officers coming and going in that police station wore guns and looked very forbidding one even carried a rifle!
The one that dealt with us was very nice though.

You can get insurance for e bikes - we priced it up was going to be over £300 for both with a maximum of only 30 days out of UK. :Sad:

maybe there are specialist bike insurers over there?

Rick (motor-roamin) had both his nicked off the back of his RV at the Oswestry RV meet last year.
both were specially commisioned bikes.

suspected Itinerant theft as they were camped, unbeknown to us, down the road.

It's just great isn't it? You try to make things as secure as possible and when they are stolen, to the authorities, it's just another day at the office.
Hope you get it back and wouldn't it be wonderful if the thieves could be caught and shot! The latter won't happen but hopefully the former will!

I can echo that.
When I take the toad I use one to lock the Aframe to my towbar while it's not in use. I bought mine from a police security stand. They have a very funny curved key.

Have to look in the local second had bike shop for a cheapy replacement.

Maybe one not so attractive so they wouldn't want you steal it!

I tried to insure our electric bikes when we bought them, Comfort didn't want to know, house insurance would not cover them as they have 250watt batteries, as do the majority of bikes sold in this country, this is a UK rule, not an EU one, so we will have to resort to expensive insurance if we want cover, the quotes I had were as much as my M/H insurance, I cannot afford to have the bikes uninsured as they were over £2000 when purchased.

sorry to hear about the theft.. I feel for you, :Sad: know exactly how you feel..

we've had TWO expensive bikes stolen.. one in Spain,outside a Lidl shop.. the thief ran up and blatantly took it from under my sons hands.. jumped on it and sped off.. :Angry:

other on the aire at Capbreton.. it was taken during the night from the back of the RV.. they cut through a strong steel cable .. took mine, (the best one) and left the others on the ground..

after that we took the advice of seasoned travellers and used cheap bikes.. rusty ones are the best.... because sadly, no matter how good your security or alarm.. if they want your nice shiny bike, sooner or later they will have it..

same goes for any kit left outside .. be it bikes, BBQ, chairs etc.. or even gas bottles... eventually they all grow legs.. :Sad:

What kind of lock/chain did you use and did the thieves cut the chain/cable or did they pick/break the lock please?

The locks that we use are simple 10mm cables with key lock built in. We are always unsure whether or not the locks are good enough for the job! We know, of course, that if they really want them they will take them but we obviously want to make it a difficult as possible. That way they may leave ours alone in favour of pinching an easier target.

Any advice that you have would be very welcome and what you intend to use in the future to protect the other one and the replacement.

:thumb:Sorry to hear about the loss of your e-bikes on the algarve,I know the feeling it is quite sickening,similar thing happened to us in Quarteira back in 1994 when we used to tow a caravan.We just went into Quarteira with the car for some postcards etc,parked on the main road in along line of parked cars right opposite the shops,had 2 mountain bikes (good-uns)1fixed to the bike rack on the boot and one on the bike rack on the roof ,we were in the shop almost dead opposite for no more than 7or8 minutes when we came out the scum bags had ha them clean away,reported it but...we now have e-bikes alsso but due to health issues haven't used them for 2years or so but our house(park home)insurer covers them for a slightly higher premium,no consolation to you now,but I'd be inclined to hang around the area for a few days in the hope of seeing some scumbag riding it,then give his ribs a good bruising before dragging him to the police station or sitting on his head till they arrive,hope you get a result!!wyntaxi .

We are in Quarteria also, there are a lot of undesirables hanging around behind the fish market and the library is in front of the fish market where the bike was stolen.
We didn't know this before the bike was stolen, it's only while we have been walking round hoping to spot it we saw them.

We used a heavy duty bike lock with a key.

Don't know how they got it, the bike and the lock was gone, we are just left with the keys to the lock and the battery.
The battery was locked too the frame so I don't know how they are going to take the battery out to charge and they haven't the key to the battery either to start the bike.

And they won't be able to charge it either, the charger was different to other chargers we have seen.

We have now bought a heavier duty motorbike 1 metre lock with a key but if they managed to pick the locks, this one would probably go too even though the keyhole looks more complicated and the key looks different also.

Talk about locking the stable door AFTER the house has bolted?

Should have bought this one first, might have still had the bike?

From memory Quateria has been full of undesirables since the Angolan war. As Angola was a former Portuguese colony many fled to Portugal. I remember there being a bit of a shanty town there on the beach and that was well over 30 years ago. Very scary place to pass through even in daylight :Sad:

......Shot ..SHOT ! That's far to good for them. If it were down to me I would hang draw and quarter them then cover them in chocolate and leave then outside a weight watchers meeting.
