Hi I was wondering if any members had any feed back or knowledge of the 50 amp 12v generators for sale on ebay at £499 as this looks like a good size and weight (11kg) for motorhome charging.

Have never used one, would never buy one, they are noisy!

Look,its just an alternator bolted to a strimmer engine! Despite what it says, it is not a proper controlled charging output. You already have an alternator on your van, you just need to harness its output more efficiently and intelligently.

Two options here,

1. Upgrade your split charging system with heavy cable and a decent heavy duty relay to decrease voltage drops and increase charge rates, or

2. Invest in a decent Battery to Battery or Alternator to Battery charger. These will speed up charge rates from your alternator AND provide a proper 4 step charge to best maintain your leisure battery. There's lots of info about these on the forum, just use the search function.:thumb:!

The cost is the joke.. the concept is really good.

They should be around £250ish but who ever is knocking them out is just greedy, and as long as mug punters are willing to make him rich why should he change the price !

good idea in principle but very crude,. Relying on the alternator to control charge rate with no electronic controls.

noisey and definately overpriced...not even a honda engine, just a cheap chinese copy..

That looks like a neat alternative.. The ones most of us know and are speaking of are very basic.. They are just a Chinese engine and an alternator more or less bolted on to a bit of checker plate ( actually a bit better than that but it will give you an idea ) and are punted out at the shows..

JP, I personally do not have a problem with the reliance on the alternator to control the charge voltage.. After all, that is the same as is used and has been used on vehicles since about the late 60's early 70's ( before that for some motors )
