20 years (unless you count my dads VW which makes it 52 years with a few gaps!!)
i have also had one for years. Just remember to double check circuits because just because it doesnt beep might not mean there is no voltage present, they are not always accurate.:thumb:

A good point.

What I had in mind is dark rainy night and the power goes off. Immediately you touch your hookup lead to see if it's inside or outside your MH.

If the hookup is live you go searching inside otherwise head for the post.

Brilliant for checking for electricity where you expect there to be electricity. Just be aware, these devices pick up a range of voltages so it's quite possible to find an induced voltage in some metalwork where you dont expect it, which can be a bit misleading. We called them wet nail testers.

Absolutely brilliant to sniff out that missing 240V supply.

That specific item had sold out when I looked (such is the popularity of MHF!) but I was able to order what seems like a similar item. It's taken a couple of weeks to arrive but I was in no hurry.

:help:

Now, I'm no electrician. The slip of paper that came with it has (scant) instructions that haven't translated well from the Chinese. So I got the instructions off the sellers website as follows:

Material Plastic, Metal
Length: about 13cm
Power Supply: Not need any power supply.
It is great for use in confined areas with one hand.
Pen shaped LCD Voltage Tester with a clip is portable for carry in your pocket.
It is suitable for home, shop, garage, automotive, motorcycles, boats.
Use:Distinguish between the LIVE WIRE and NEUTRAL WIRE; Detection electrical conductor whether live or dead.
Voltage detection:
Voltage detection range: AC/DC Voltage 12-250V.
Indirect detection the LIVE WIRE,NEUTRAL WIRE and breakpoint of AC.

Touch (DIRECT) button, metal tip contact the detected objects, the tester show five sections of voltage:12V, 36V, 55V, 110V and 220V.
The final value is the measured voltage value
(Did not reach 70% of the value of high-end, showing the low-end value).
INDUCTANCE detection:
1. Touch (INDUCTANCE) button, metal tip close to the detection of objects , if it show "high voltage symbol" said object with alternate current.
2. Measurement disconnect the wires , Touch (INDUCTANCE) button, metal tip close to the outer layer of wire insulation, Disconnection phenomenon---"high voltage symbol" disappear at the breakpoint.
Caution: Do not press two poles at the same time while detecting or else it will not display the exact result or the induction will be weakened.

Can anyone help with a SIMPLE explanation of how it works?

I would be grateful. :thumb:

Impossible to tell but you're not going to sue me at that price are you ?

I couldn't even post it for that price.

Just started!
I always understood these only work with AC and NOT DC.

As far as I'm aware, they work by detecting the magnetic flux produced by the alternating current.

Had a problem with a ceiling light in the house and used on of these which indicated power to said light but NO light when switched on
sparky said something about AC only and there was NO power to light so maybe good as a guide but that's about all I would say

Black and Decker used to make a similar gadget, not pen shaped though, that would also detect wooden battens and hollows in a wall.
This was in the '80's when I worked for BT.

What your looking at is called a "voltstick".

We are not allowed to use them to check for 240v AC.

We MUST use these;

You'll see that the tester comes with a proving unit. The proving unit produces 240v at low current. So what you do is, test the tester on the proving unit, looking for a live indication, then test the circuit under test, then test the tester again on the proving unit.

The above makes sure that the tester is NOT faulty when testing a live circuit.

The tester also has finger guards to ensure your fingers will not slip along the unit and make contact with live circuits.

Hope that helps.
