Does anyone know Padstow Touring Park? We stayed at the CC site at Truro a few weeks ago and though it was a very swish site the opportunity to walk on paths from the site were a bit limited. The Padstow site looks ideal from the map as you can reach Padstow, the coast and the Camel Trail from it on foot and it is open all year - which we need for few days away next week.

Alternatively, can anyone recommend sites open at this time of year with good walking not a million miles from Plymouth? Proper sites only as we want hot showers to thaw out in at the end of the day!

We stayed a couple of days at Tencreek touring park Looe in Jan 2011. Nice walks out the back of the site on the SW coast path. Looe in one direction and Polperro the other way.

Coastal walking sites

Hi,

If you are considering. Padstow then I'm guessing anywhere in Cornwall meets your criteria, in which case here are two sites we use and love:

Treloan, just a few hundred yards outside the village of Portschatho on the Roseland peninsula. Beach, coast path, two pubs, small local supermarkets, all within a few hundred yards and a very friendly site, open all year and only around £15 per night at this time of year. We love it.

Trevalylor. Just outside Botallack on the coastal road from Carnyorth towards Dt Just. We are going there with friends for NYE. The pub is about 200 yards away and the coastal path not much further. :thumb:

Many thanks for your suggestions, will look on the map for them.

Our van does have a shower but it also doubles as the washroom so much prefer to use someone else's showerin December as we don't fancy going to bed with a wet loo.

Have stayed there a few times for the Obby Oss. Have also stayed on the harbour carpark just past the fish market with no problems when visiting Rick Padsteins :winky:

We've stayed at Padstow Touring Park several times and it's one of our favourites. Friendly owners, beautifully laid out site, great washrooms (try the ones nearest reception, they're like mini bathrooms without a bath if you see what I mean). Easy walk across fields into Padstow, and easy access to some great beaches. Not overpriced either.

Well, rang them up to come this weekend and...they're full! Padstow Festival apparently so will need to go some other time. A popular site indeed.

To close the loop, so to speak, we have just got back from 3 nights at Treloan (many thanks HymerB544 for the suggestion) and will certainly go back. We were fortunate with excellent weather but despite the good forecast there was only one other unit on the site apart from us, which was a shame for the owners.

For £15 a night including electrickery and free hot showers it was pretty good value. The facilities are a bit tired but they are refurbishing the main loo block so they are certainly putting effort into improving things.

We went for the walking, which was excellent. On Saturday we walked to the lighthouse at the end of the Roseland peninsula at St Anthony Head - an 8 mile round trip - going by the coastal path and returning inland by quiet roads and tracks. Lots of interesting beaches on the coast and at the old fort behind the lighthouse* there is a bird hide overlooking a Peregrine Falcon nesting site. There is a diary you can read where folk have recorded sightings of the birds and the most recent, when we sat down to read it was about 10 days ago. To be honest we only went to the hide to eat our sandwiches and didn't know what to expect but no sooner did I bite into a cheese sandwich when a Peregrine took off from the little cliff opposite. So, if you want to see Peregrines in Cornwall go to Roseland and arm yourself with a cheese sandwich.

On Sunday we took a gentler walk to Percuil (see piccy below) via the path from Gerrans and in the afternoon dragged the dog** to Porthcurnick beach just north of Portscatho.

* There is a prominent sign at the NT car park "To the Lighthouse" so we followed the path which drops steeply down the headland to reach a tall freshly painted gate firmly locked with a sign in best Trinity House speak saying effectively "private property, go away." So, if going to this headland, give the lighthouse a miss.

**Old, deaf and arthritic - and that's just me. The dog is in an even worse state.

Hi, glad you liked it! That walk from the site down to St Anthony's is one of our favourites and we will do that walk next Summer when the tall ships come to Falmouth to get a grandstand view. The walk in the opposite direction is just as good and takes you past the Hidden Hut (outdoor cafe above the beach).

Last time we were at St Anthony's we also walked down to the lighthouse with the same frustrating result! You'd think with such a steep path, they would put the closed sign at the top!::bigsmile:

The Roseland is lovely - glad you liked it

It's one of the nicest parts of Cornwall imo, I would happily move to Portscatho.
