I have met a chap in Spain who has a 28 year old Merc based Hymer. He says he is having huge problems sourcing spare parts. I know Fiat no longer support my 20 year old but had thought that Mercedes supported models for 30 - 40 years.

Does anyone know of any good starting points to look for spares/service items for old Mercs?

Mercedes commercial parts are available new for most post war vehicles direct from Stuttgart. Mercedes have always prided themselves in the backup of there vehicles. Thats why many long haul owner drivers favour the older Mercs. Mercedes Stuttgart used to guarantee delivery of any part worldwide within 48 hours. Its some years since I had to use there services, but when I did, they always lived up to there promises. If your friend is stuck then give them a call direct. Unfortunately I do not have there number now, but having read this post I think I will dig it out.
