Our first stop just over the Spanish border into Portugal and we opted for the aire at Almeida, which looks nothing in the aires book, what a pleasant suprise.

Almeida is a well preserved star shaped fort and we could park right in the fortifiied outer wall, could you just imagine that in an old English town.

At around 5.30 a chappie came around with a clip board and Lynda went to pay him and in broken English he said " Oh no charge we just record the number plates, and welcome to Almeida enjoy your stay, oh and you are welcome to plug in to the electric point in the toilets for gratis"

I include four piccies one of which, unusually, is of the toilets which were almost hotel standards----- Well worth a visit

That looks like a beauty Alan. If you find any more let me know as I'm compiling a map of aires for our winter trip, many of them in Portugal.

Broken Link Removed to see more aires some which may not be in the aires books.
