black smoke....overfueling

blue smoke....oil burning.

WHITE SMOKE....WATER 'burning'

sounds like a head gasket leak Bill.

are you sure there isnt a hairline crack between cylinder and a water gallery or the same in the head.

did you have the head skimmed and pressure tested.

Does the white smoke smell dieselly Bill?

You'll soon smell the sweet smell of antifreeze if its water. Your pump timing might be out if it's diesel. Are the injectors known good ones? The fact she's knocking says compression is good so valve clearances are most like likely OK.

As mentioned previously, might be worth double checking your pump timing.:thumb:

It can be easy to confuse white smoke (unburnt diesel) & steam (usually coolant).
Smell the smoke. If it smells sweet it's coolant (glycol).
If it smells acrid & makes your eyes smart its fuel(diesel).
If it's knocking on one cyl suspect sticking injector.
If it's knocking on all, suspect timing advanced.

Some body told me once that their cat was poisoned by antifreeze.

If you sat a cat by Bill's exhaust, that would confirm whether the smoke was diesel or coolant!:thumb:

Bill if there is a definite knock bleed each injector in turn ---simple job and if the knock goes then good if not then there is summat else possibly timing wrong or a duff injector

Just to encourage you, over the years I have re built about a dozen engines and never got any satisfaction from it

A blown turbocharger can also cause white smoke from the exhaust, it's usually fairly thick white smoke due to the turbo pressure, hope that helps.

Allways be careful when having head skimmed as when you torque the head bolts they can bottom out in the hole leaving the head loose but givving the correct torque setting we have had to grind the bolts slightly shorter before.

if you get a head gasket design for skimmed heads it takes up the slack
alleviating that problem

Good man, you can monitor sediment with this, may get a significant amount of swarf first time but should diminish from there and also get finer.
