Would folding ladders help?

If you do change it all and decide you need the interior recovering, Carol has the name of a very reasonable place which did her Hymer. You would need to pm her if she doesn't see this post.

unable to raise the floor as its a french bed layout and the shower toilet is in the other corner. Cheers anyway and there is not enough room for a ladder.

My French bed is high too ..... I have fallen out many a time when getting up to use the loo in the night.... Bearing this in mind is there a flat wooden side to it ... I was thinking that there was a thread by Jaws on folding shelves somewhere and a company that makes them. . . maybe a flat-folding step might help. Sorry, don't know how desperate you are to lower the bed.. is it possible to raise the floor AROUND the bed and have a small step down to the main van ... my Burstner has that.

If the bed is too high then you could cut a step or two into the side of the bed without taking up any space or have a fold down step. Uncomfortable couches are usually caused by tired upholstery, but thinking of the size problem it maybe the problem is one of lower leg length. You may have a problem lowering the height due to wheel arches, or watertank if they come within the seat area the answer is to add an extra width back and a footstool on her seat. New upholstery is easy done and there are a number of decent firms to do the job with lots of satisfied funsters to offer recomendations:thumb:

My Mrs is also vertically challenged, and finds a footrest useful especially in the front. Our footrest is actually a metal toolbox with a bit of carpet on top, so its useful for keeping things in as well.

As you so nicely put it I am also vertically challenged  just 5ft and find the easiest way is just to have small fold up stool handy then when I need to get in the cuboards easy, and a ladder with hooks on the side to clip on the bed that can be popped on the top when not it use.

If you are looking to change the interior furnishings I can recommend Regal Furnishings in Ilkeston.

They have a facility which allows you to stay at their premises overnight, with EHU and they start to do the work early in the morning and aim to finish by 4pm.

I was very pleased with the quality of the work, and the price.

Can't remember ;)
Have you enough room to lower the fixed bed into the garage ?A bit drastic but You can always rip everything out and lower everthing as you put it all back -- Don't think it will help come resale time but it's your van and if it enables you to use it then go for it :thumb:
I did a complete rip out and renew Boards, cupboards and upholstery inc new roof cost me about 2.5k and a couple of weeks work for two of us :thumb:

many many years! since I was a kid
as previously mentioned, altering the original layout will have a very negative effect on resale value. a very good solution i have seen is a set of folding stairs. these were built by a boat builder but a competent carpenter would be able to do a good job. basically it was all hinged so the steps folded upwards as you put them away and were secured by a sliding bolt each side at the top

as for the settees and upholstery, there are some specialist firms that make quality replacements like careavan etc

If you are a handy diy'er.

Get a strip of Piano hinge. Make a fold down step which you can screw to the side of the bed. Not too difficult to make and can be removed easily at resale time.

For the seats. I have made a step in front of the seating area in mine. The seat height was dictated by the size of the water tank and being a short arse my feet dangled and it got uncomfortable very very quickly.

The step also turned out to be a good place to locate a safe :thumb:
