Without trying to sound like a bit of a plank can someone clear up a quandry of ours regarding mains connection. If we hook-up to 240 volts, is this just to keep the battery charged up or can we use conventional 240 volt items in the three point sockets. Is it necessary for us to buy a 12 volt toaster or TV for example or can we use normal mains electrical items if we are hooked-up to the mains on a site?

of course you can that's the whole point of hooking up although when you hook up it keeps your battery on charge as well. but always ask on site what electrical devices to use at one time.for instance can you use the kettle microwave hair dryer all at once.some sites differ as to power strength steve:thumb:

the ehu provides both ,mains power thru the sockets and 12v battery charging as well . one thing to bear in mind though is that different sites {esp abroad} supply the mains power at different amps so you need to check first before you go pluging in fires ,hair dryers etc !! regards garry

There is a formula volts x amps = watts.
Put simply if site has a 10Amp supply,then 240v x 10A = 2,400 Watts.
All your appliances should have wattage marked on them.Exceed that and you will trip ,certainly,your EHU post and maybe that of others.
It can be fun,as we found in Portugal with only a 4Amp supply once

Hi and welcome to the site. most points covered however, you never ever should use 12V for heating appliences such as toaster, kettle, hairdryer. You will flatten the battery in no time and possibly kill it. Toast and kettle use gas for hair dryer stick head out of the window.:thumb:

Although we banter amongst ourselves at times we never mean to be deliberately insulting.

You are not by any means "a plank" all of us knew absolutely nothing about motorhoming once, so just ask away I am sure there will be more questions as time goes on and I will guarantee that a funster somewhere will give you good advice and help. Not a silly question at all. If you don't know something much better to ask. A sense of humour helps which you seem to have.
If you are buying a tv for your motorhome its better to get a dual voltage 12/240v model then you can use it if you are not on hook up.
